Domaine de Chevalier, drive for perfection

The origins of Domaine de Chevalier date back to 1783. Located in Léognan, the main city of the Graves Region, the estate was purchased in 1983 by the Bernard Family, N° 1 in France on the spirits market and a major negociant of premium Bordeaux wines. It has been run ever since by Olivier Bernard who perpetuates that spirit of balance and the constant drive for perfection which have been the hallmark of this outstanding wine. The white Domaine de Chevalier is recognized as one of the Bordeaux finest dry wines.

The white vineyard covers 7 hectares and is in conversion to Organic Farming.

Tasting notes

Intense fruity brilliance, elegant and very complex. Fresh fragrances of citrus, herbs, and spring white f lowers (hawthorn, acacia, elderflower) envelop the concentrated and very fresh white fruits (vine peach, nectarine, pear, passion fruit...) in a delicate manner. On the palate, this wine unfolds with distinguished elegance. Its richness and caressing texture, elegantly poised, are adorned with the wild flavors of the terroir. The 2023 L'Esprit de Chevalier Blanc has a stern bouquet that takes time to open in the glass, light sea spray scents, quite malic but this is very well defined. The palate is well balanced with fine acidity, a lovely resinous texture, plenty of extract here that is commendable for a second wine. Doubtless great value given the quality.

Ripe citrus, honeyed flowers, mint, and a kiss of background oak all define the 2023 Domaine De Chevalier Blanc, a beautifully textured, medium-bodied white that has terrific mid-palate depth and richness, integrated acidity, and a great finish. It's clearly up with the crème de la crème and has the vintage's mix of richness and freshness.

The white 2023 Domaine de Chevalier soars from the glass, after a swirl or two, with vivacious notes of white peaches, fresh pineapple, and juicy pears, leading to suggestions of coriander seed, honeysuckle, and candle wax. The medium-bodied palate is tight-knit and vibrant, with well-knit acidity and a long, chalky finish. The blend is 70% Sauvignon Blanc and 30% Sémillon.

Juicy lemons, white flowers, pomelo, green apples, and a hint of pineapples crowd into the perfume. The palate is packed with ripe, sweet, creamy, yellow citrus, green apples, honeysuckle , crushed stones, and vanilla-tinted orange rinds. You can enjoy this in its youth, or age it for more complexity. Either way, it is a treat. The wine blends 70% Sauvignon Blanc with 30% Semillon, 14% ABV, 3.21 pH. The harvest took place August 28 - September 6. Drink from 2026-2037. 95 Pts.

Got to be the most consisent of all Pessac Léognan whites, sets out its stall immediately with fresh acidities and fennel spice, giving a kick and lift, classically nuanced and structured. White pear, sage, liqourice root, savoury as all hell, and so moriesh. Working with Stéphane Derenocourt since 2018 on the whites (longer on the reds).

The 2023 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc is one of the best dry whites of the year. Creamy and expansive, with terrific brightness, this exudes balance. Citrus confit, white pepper, mint, almond, pear and crushed rocks are some of the notes that build as the 2023 shows off its pedigree. I expect it will offer exceptional drinking for the next several decades. What else is new?

This is layered and complex with an impressive mineral tension and depth. Medium- to full-bodied, very long and persistent. It has oyster shell, crushed stone and citrus peel character with racy acidity coming through, adding to its length and tension. Very long and firm at the end with a backbone of fine tannins for a white. 70% sauvignon blanc and 30% semillon.

The 2023 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc was picked from August 28 to September 6 at 45hL/ha. It’s a blend of 70% Sauvignon Blanc and 30% Sémillon. This has wonderful purity on the nose, revealing scents of lime, green apple and crushed stone—one of the most precise I have encountered at this early stage. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity that lends this white Pessac-Léognan superb focus. There’s real intensity here, building with a sense of nascent confidence toward the mineral, almost slate-like finish. Very long and tender, this is a white Domaine de Chevalier from the top drawer.
