Doisy-Daene - Barsac 2023

Denis Dubourdieu Domaines

George, the aesthete and master of winemaking; Pierre, the visionary; Denis, the esteemed vinegrower and a benchmark in white wine production; and finally, Fabrice and Jean Jacques, the worthy successors. it is no understatement to say that the Dubourdieu family has profoundly shaped the wine industry over generations.

Today, the family is involved with several distinguished estates, including Château Reynon, Clos Floridène, Château du Haura, and Château Doisy-Daëne. Fabrice and Jean-Jacques continue to honor their father's remarkable legacy and perpetuate the exceptional craftsmanship of their family.

Doisy-Daëne, the family's first grand cru classé.

Château Doisy-Daëne, a Second Grand Cru Classé from the 1855 Barsac classification, is renowned for its distinctive terroir. The Barsac plateau, a unique geological feature in Bordeaux, consists of a thin layer of clayey sands, known as "the red sands of Barsac," which overlays a limestone subsoil. During the summer months, this finely porous limestone releases the water it has absorbed over the winter to the vines, thus preventing excessive water stress. This soil composition lends an extraordinary delicacy to the white wines produced here.

Tasting notes

The wine from Doisy-Daëne boasts a unique style, emphasizing the brilliance of fruit intensified by 'noble rot', along with vibrancy, balance, and delicate flavors. This style represents the expression of a superb limestone terroir and a family tradition of crafting elegant white wines. These wines exhibit diamond-like clarity, blending strength with freshness in a seemingly everlasting youth.

The 2023 Doisy-Daëne is redolent of pineapple, tangerine oil and passion fruit. Doisy-Daëne is usually a bit more floral, but the 2023 seems to be built on striking textural richness. As good as the 2023 is, it will be much more complete with a few years in bottle.

The 2023 Doisy-Daëne has a bright and quite intense bouquet: dried honey, candle wax and quince, quite complex but it deserves time. The palate is just exquisite on the opening, with a viscous texture, orange pith and quince mixed with wild honey and a touch of white peach. There is real weight and density on the finish, another superb Doisy-Daëne and perchance superior to the previous vintage, tasted a few weeks later.

This shows aromas of white pepper, dried peaches and dried mushrooms. The palate is composed and refined, its subdued richness lifted by vibrant acidity. Angular and saline, with an elegant, precise texture and a balanced, savory finish. 80% semillon and 20% sauvignon blanc. This will improve substantially with age. Drink or hold.

The 2023 Château Doisy Daëne is another ripe, powerful wine, yet it brings a juicy, lively style in its sweet peach, citrus, and orange fruit as well as notes of candied ginger, mint, and sappy floral aromas and flavors. It has beautiful acidity, full-bodied richness, and a great finish.

Vanilla, flowers, candied pineapple, white peach, apricots, orange skins, and roasted nuts. The vibrance on the palate, with the purity, and energy in the tropical fruits, paired with ample acidity to give this lift makes this a true, sweet, treat. Drink from 2026-2050. 94-96 Pts.

Pale gold with vibrant edging, starts with concentrated and intense clove spices, luscious apricot fruit, opening to show juicy, sculpted slivers of steel and lime juice. A return to form for this excellent Barsac wine after the succulent but unbalanced 2022. Great stuff from this legendary Dubourdieu property, although once again the yields are extremely low and the character is more concentrated than you find in vintages like 2021. Ageing starts with 10 months in oak barrels, followed by 9 months in stainless steel tank before bottling.

The 2023 Doisy-Daëne is all class. Lifted aromatics open first. Delicate and understated in feel, with fine balance, the 2023 has so much to offer. Tangerine peel, passion fruit, mint, apricot and a kiss of sweet spice blossom with a bit of aeration. Doisy-Daëne remains one of the most sublime wines in Barsac and Sauternes.

The 2023 Doisy-Daëne, a blend of 80% Sémillon and 20% Sauvignon Blanc, takes time to unfurl on the nose. Notes of lemon curd, dried peach and a touch of marmalade are all nicely defined, developing subtle pithy elements with aeration. The palate is just wonderful. Very harmonious with perfectly judged acidity, it’s extremely pure with a tensile finish. This is Barsac in full flight. It will be outstanding once bottled. Bravo!

Light yellow gold, silver reflections. Delicate nuances of cloves, ripe pineapple, hints of bergamot. Ripe peach on the palate, juicy and ripe, fine acidity, lingers, sweet apri- cot in the finish, more like a sweet late harvest.

There’s a refined focus and beauty to this, with spice and honey character. Medium-bodied, sweet and poised. Flavorful at the end, in an elegant way, with density and tension.
