Dame de Montrose - Saint-Estèphe 2024

Château Montrose, the revelation of a unique terroir

Martin and Olivier Bouygues acquired Château Montrose in 2006. Like ambassadors, they seek to reveal, accompany, and respect this unique terroir, spanning over 90 hectares in one contiguous plot, ideally located on the banks of the Gironde estuary. 2022 marks the beginning of a new chapter for the estate. Pierre Graffeuille, former CEO of Domaines Delon, is appointed as the General Manager of SCDM Domaines de la Familles Bouygues and continues the development of the properties managed over the past decade by Hervé Berland.

La Dame de Montrose - reliable quality, lasting enjoyment

La Dame de Montrose was created in 1983 as a tribute to Yvonne Charmolüe, who single-handedly managed Château Montrose from 1944 to 1960. Elaborated from the same vineyard and with the same rigor as the Grand Vin, La Dame de Montrose, derived from a second selection, is a predominantly Merlot wine that is supple and silky.
La Dame de Montrose is a reliable value from Saint-Estèphe that reaches its maturity sooner. Its pronounced red fruit aromas represent another expression of the terroir in a style of its own, dense but accessible, seductive but distinguished.

The 2024 vintage: Return to the origins of the terroir

“Marked by the oceanic influence, the 2024 vintage is shaped by the challenges of the climate, polished by commitment, responsiveness and expertise.
The harmonious Dame, who captivates with her clarity.”
Charlotte Bouygues, Chairman.

Tasting notes:

La Dame de Montrose, with a strong Merlot dominance, expresses itself in elegance, indulgence, and sensuality. Its airy nose reveals aromas of peony and blackcurrant, with vibrant and dazzling fruit. On the palate, a sensation of freshness and tension is accompanied by great finesse. La Dame combines lightness, precision, and refinement, in a harmony of striking clarity.

Medium to deep garnet-purple colored. Strides out with confident notes of fresh black and red plums, black raspberries, and pencil lead, followed by hints of tilled soil and wild sage. The light to medium-bodied palate is tight-knit with crisp acidity and lightly chewy tannins, finishing with great length.

The 2024 La Dame De Montrose is based on 73% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the balance Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, aging in 15% new oak, with a small amount in foudre and amphora. Juicy, lively red and blue fruits, spring flowers, and spice all emerge from the glass, and it's medium-bodied, with a pretty, pure, elegant texture and soft tannins. It's a charming, seamless second wine that will offer pleasure right out of the gate.

So Montrose already, with lovely intense dark glossy berry fruits that are so pure and precise and pixilated in their detail. There’s a trace of Montrose graphite too and a little wild raspberry and loganberry. Broad in frame, but not too broad, with lovely layers of cashmere. A wine of great purity and clarity but with lovely grip and shape from the tannins drawing the wine downwards horizontally in the mouth. Clean and long on the finish.

A refined and crunchy second wine with red currants and blackcurrants, some crush stones and juicy tannins. A nice center palate. Balanced and pretty for the vintage. Medium finish. From organically grown grapes. 73% melrot, 20% cabernet sauvignon, 4% petite verdot and 3% cabernet franc.

The 2024 La Dame de Montrose—raised in 15% new oak, 20% foudres and 2% amphora—has a straightforward, relatively light bouquet with blackberry, hints of black olive and light gravelly scents. The palate is medium-bodied with sharp acidity on the entry, balanced but just a little austere towards the second half. It needs to muster more fruité on the finish, but at least displays freshness and classicism.

The 2024 La Dame de Montrose is a very elegant, sexy wine. Lifted aromatics, bright red-toned fruit and silky tannins speak to finesse. All the elements are so well balanced. A burst of red cherry, mocha and crushed flowers extends the soft, supple finish. The 2024 is being raised in approximately 63% used oak, 20% foudre, 15% new oak and 2% amphora. It's an incredibly charming wine that should drink well on release.

Orange blossoms, flowers, red berries, and black cherry aromas show up with ease. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, vibrant, fresh, long, and spicy. The fruits are clean, energized, and lively. This is going to offer its significant charms shortly after release. The wine blends 73% Merlot, 20 Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Petit Verdot, and 3% Cabernet Franc. 13.5% ABV. Drink from 2027-2040.

La Dame de Montrose 2024 immediately strikes with its high acidity-a surprising trait for a wine composed of 73% Merlot. Its crisp and refreshing style is unexpected, yet captivating. Juicy on the entry of the palate, it offers a remarkably relaxed tasting experience, while the roundness on the finish subtly enhances the wine’s overall depth. Though the structure tends to be restrained, La Dame de Montrose exceeds expectations thanks to precise extraction and finely polished tannins.

If the grand vin is built for the ages, the 2024 La Dame de Montrose plays a different hand, emphasizing suavity and charm. Offering up notes of blackcurrants, raspberries, violets and licorice, it's medium to full-bodied, ample and suave, with supple tannins, lively acids and a seamless, complete profile. It's a blend of 73% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc that sees a more reductive élevage than the grand vin.

This has dark fruit character, leafy but nuanced and sculpted, lovely savoury mouthwatering quality on the finish, At Montrose they did some leaf removal even in early June at fruit set, and left grass throughout the vineyard all the way through the season to increase competition, and did some tidying up at the very beginning of veraison to remove any that were clearly a little behind schedule - so basically just had to be extremely reactive at all times. The yield was 38hl/h after farming entirely organically. Harvest 23 September to 8 October. 20% large oak casks, 15% new oak.

Deep dark ruby, opaque core, purple reflections, subtle brightening on the rim. Dark wild berries, a hint of liquorice, black cherries, fine wood spice, inviting bouquet. Juicy, elegant, fresh cherry fruit, lively structure, mineral, salty finish, a refined food wine with a red berry aftertaste.

73% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Petit Verdot, 3% Cabernet Franc
