Dalla Valle, Maya - Napa Valley 2015

VERY LIMITED QUANTITIES

The RRP are very important to the winery.

The vintage

With 2015 being the driest year on record in California, our estate vineyard showed its grit and tenacity, gliding through the summer with low vigor canopies and a small but balanced crop load. By mid-season we knew it was going to be an early harvest, and indeed it was, we were finished by the second week in September. The crew was ready, and worked diligently to carefully hand harvest and sort the fruit. Color and tannin extracted easily, and very quickly we had some eye-opening wines in the barrel— dark, aromatic, fresh, and very limited in quantity.

The wine
The 2015 Maya shows the great potential of the vintage. Its red-purple hue belies the wine’s brightness and fresh aromatic quality, with tones of freshcut strawberry, cardamom, and flint. This blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc exhibits a combination of depth, richness, and laserlike focus, delivering a rush of red and black fruit flavors, along with notes of cured meats and salted black licorice. The texture is soft and silky, but at the same time powerful and incredibly lengthy. This vintage of Maya is accessible today, but will absolutely continue to develop, and will last decades in the bottle.

As good as it gests, yet in a different style compared to the also perfect 2016, the 2015 Maya Proprietary Red Wine boasts a sensational, ethereal, heavently style to go with tons of cassis and blackberry fruits intermixted with notions of dried earth, tobacco, chocolate, and a beautiful sense of minerality. This cuvée is normally a blend of 60-70% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Cabernet Franc, and it's the Cabernet Franc that gives it another layer of complexity and elegance. The sexy, upfront nature of the 2015 vintage is front and center. This is a magical wine to drink over the coming 3+ decades. Drink 2019 - 2049.

Very deep crimson. Lifted and both rich and refreshing with some really luscious fruit. Sweetly Napa ripeness without heaviness. Splits the difference – though the acidity on the finish is a little jagged. Sweet ink. Drink 2018-2025

The 2015 Maya is surprisingly powerful and tightly wound. Time in the glass allows the tannins to relax just enough for the fruit to gradually emerge. Like all of the 2015s here, the Maya is still very primary in its expression of fruit. Even so, the wine's heady, flamboyant personality is very much on display. Dark cherry, plum, mocha, licorice, lavender and exotic spice overtones gradually develop in the glass, but it will be years before the 2015 enters its prime.

The polish and depth to this wine is extraordinary for the vintage. Full body, super refined and tight yet generous and exciting. Chocolate, walnut and berry. Goes on for minutes. Superb for the vintage. Better in 2020 but already so wonderful.

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2015 Maya Proprietary Red Wine opens with sweet plums, spice box and kirsch notes with nuances of vanillin, cocoa powder, dried herbs and loam. Medium to full-bodied, soft, approachable and very sexy even at this youthful stage, it has a long, perfumed finish. This was tasted as a barrel sample.
