Croizet Bages - Pauillac 2022

Croizet-Bages, a flourishing Grand Cru Classé

Château Croizet-Bages, Grand Cru Classé in 1855, owes its name to the Croizet brothers, emblematic dynasty of the Médoc, who created the estate in the 17th century in the heart of the famous hamlet of Bages in Pauillac. Château Croizet-Bages received special recognition at the 1878 and 1889 universal exhibitions, as symbolised by the gold medals on the label.

In 1942, Monsieur Paul Quié, already owner of another estate in Haut-Médoc, wine merchant and wine lover, clearly saw the potential of this classified growth. He then replanted the vineyard with enthusiasm and patience.

Today, Anne-Françoise and Jean-Philippe Quié, the third generation, carry on the development of the estate. They have launched the renovation of the cellars in order to build new performing technical installations to improve the quality of the wine. Château Croizet-Bages is a generous, opulent, expressive wine with a very powerful bouquet reminiscent of black fruit, spice, and cedar, accompanied on the palate by a fine tannic texture.

The toasty oak aromas still stand out after bottling. Through the wine’s rich texture, you can sense the smokiness, roasted hazelnuts, roasted almonds, as well as the fragrant spices of star anise and cinnamon. The structure is robust, but the juicy mouthfeel prevents it from overwhelming. The aromas of black plum, mulberry, and blackberry create a luscious, mature fragrance. If the tannins in the finish were a bit softer, it would elevate the wine even further.

Velvety tannins, cassis and bilberry, leaps into the pencil lead and crayon character of Pauillac, and is an excellent Croizet Bages. Relatively good value for classified Bordeaux, this is one to recommend and get stuck in to - no need to wait too long, just another few years.

The spicy, complex, medium to full-bodied 2022 Château Croizet-Bages sports a ruby/plum hue, ample red and black fruits, some leather, incense, and cedar pencil notes, terrific overall balance, ripe tannins, and a great finish. The blend is 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34.5% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot, all raised in 50% new barrels.

The 2022 Croizet Bages has a decent nose with black plum, pencil shaving and light tobacco scents, demonstrating a little more finesse than previous vintages. The palate is medium-bodied and pure, with smooth tannins and fine delineation. It's quite caressing toward the finish. This is undoubtedly one of the better wines from the Pauillac estate that I have tasted.

A refined and polished Croizet-Bages with currants, fresh thyme and basil. It’s medium-bodied with fine tannins and a creamy-textured finish. Medium, fruity and juicy finish. Drink after 2027.

The 2022 Croizet Bages is a very pretty, open-knit Pauillac. Crushed flowers, sweet red-toned fruit, blood orange, mint and white pepper are all laced together. Soft, plush contours wrap it all together. The 2022 is on the riper side in terms of profile and weight, but it's well balanced.

Juicy and succulent, savoury dark chocolate and tobacco, liquorice and coffee line the fruit giving more of a savoury nuance to the palate and which lingers on the finish. Very tannic, charged and pushed as well as a little dry, the fruit feels overly extracted. It's fresh though and nicely minty with good texture to the tannins. Acidity is also there, though covered by the tannins. Tasted twice.

Upon my first taste, the prominent notes of oak were evident, yet upon re-tasting the wine at the chateau, the aromas had distinctly unfolded. Rich and luscious on the palate, the wine exuded an abundance of toasty hazelnut and almond, infused with hints of star anise and cinnamon, and culminated with a lingering finish of dark plum, mulberry, and blackberry. The wine boasted a solid structure, while its succulent texture kept it from feeling heavy. Should the tannins on the finish become even more supple, this wine has the potential to be elevated to new heights. I eagerly anticipate its performance when bottled.

Medium deep crimson. Dark berry vanilla wax polish aromas with chinotto notes. Concentrated juicy blackcurrant, dark cherry fruits, gariny textures and touch dominant vanilla/ marzipan notes. Firm and sweet at the finish. Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot with small parcels of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot 50%+ new oak)

The dense purple-hued 2022 Château Croizet-Bages is another elegant, balanced, impressive Pauillac in the vintage. Giving up lots of cassis and darker currant-like fruits, it's medium to full-bodied, has a pure, layered, elegant mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and some classic Pauillac lead pencil, leather, and spicy wood nuances.

Firm, dry and very Pauillac. Tight tannic frame but is there sufficient fruit for the long haul? Touch of chew on the finish.

Flowers, cherries, currants, cigar wrappers and a touch of spice create the nose. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, fresh, spicy, and savory, with a peppery edge to the chewy currants in the finish. Drink from 2026-2045.

Juicy and nicely fruity with blackcurrant, walnut and light spice character. Medium to full body. Chewy at the end. Should fill in more in the center palate with the elevage.

Silky texture on the opening beats, clear depth to the black fruit, slightly drying tannins that just close things off on the finish but this has Pauillac typicity in spades, with charcoal, graphite and crushed rock character, great stuff.
