Croix de Gay - Pomerol 2022

La Croix de Gay, a family property in Pomerol for 5 centuries

Since 1477, the Raynaud-Lebreton family has been the only owner of Château La Croix de Gay.

The vineyard of Château La Croix de Gay covers four hectares. The 10 parcels are spread over 3 sectors. The majority of the parcels that make up the heart of the Grand Vin blend are located between the Châteaux Rouget and Le Gay, on the high terrace of Pomerol, a terroir with "exceptional viticultural aptitudes".

Spicy, rich, plenty of fruit, fleshy with spiced cloves, orange peel, raspberry and damson. 50% new oak, 25hl/h yield, low even for the vintage, clay gravel soils with clay subsoils.

Plums, black cherries, sappy flowers, and chocolaty nuances all emerge from the 2022 Château La Croix De Gay, a charming, round, nicely textured, medium to full-bodied Pomerol. It has juicy acidity, the ripe, upfront style of the vintage, and a great finish. A blend of 89% Merlot and 11% Cabernet Franc, drink bottles over the coming 10-15 years.

Blackberry, blueberry and sandalwood aromas follow through to a medium body with a solid core of fruit and tannins that are integrated and very fine. It goes on for minutes. Extremely well done for the vintage. Traditional Pomerol with depth. Drink after 2029.

Fresh and lively, but quite tart and a little stalky too, nice acidity keeps the freshness, but the flavours are quite intensely spiced and herbal with strawberry, raspberry, liquorice, clove and dark chocolate giving a bitterness all the way through which doesn't quite match the sharp tangy fruit at this point. Tannins are well integrated, but so well that the sharpness stands out a little. A yield of 25hl/ha.

I wish I could be more positive about the 2022 La Croix de Gay. It just seems to miss the same fruit intensity as its peers on the nose, just a bit staid by comparison. The palate is balanced but feels a bit hollow, which is perplexing in a vintage like this. It's not bad and it's an improvement on last year's wine, but having tasted this Pomerol back to the 1940s, I know that it can do better.

Medium deep crimson. Redcurrant, red plum, ribena aromas with herb garden notes. Sweet fruited and supple textured with bouyant red berry, cassis favours, fine grainy tannins, attractive mid palate viscosity and underlying marzipan notes. (Merlot, Cabernet Franc 50% new oak)

Love the poise of this wine, rich inky colour, plenty of grilled spice and floral character on the nose, opens to cassis and raspberry fruits, tempered by orange peel and pomegrante. The drama of the vintage is here too, with fennel, aniseed and rosemary coming in waves on the finish drama spice notes, along with a flash of heat.

The 2022 La Croix de Gay is deep garnet-purple in color. A little shut-down to begin, with coaxing the nose opens to reveal scents of stewed black and red cherries, prunes, and mocha, followed by wafts of charcoal and damp soil. The full-bodied palate is dense and spicy, with soft tannins and well-judged acidity, finishing on a savory note.

Au château, le 2022 se présente avec beaucoup d’élégance et avec le velouté sincère que l’on est en droit d’attendre du cru.

Ample red and black fruits, spice, sappy herbs, and some leathery nuances emerge from the 2022 Château La Croix De Gay, a complex, medium to full-bodied, fruit-forward Pomerol that stays nicely balanced. This fruit-loaded beauty is going to drink nicely right out of the gate.

The 2022 La Croix de Gay is powerful and also a bit burly in its contours yet shows terrific depth. Dark red fruit, spice, leather, tobacco, incense and dried herbs lend a bit of complexity. The 2022 could be quite good, especially if some of the more angular contours soften. Drinking window : 2025-2034

Quite floral in nature, the wine is loaded with sweet, ripe cherries, and juicy plums. Medium-bodied, soft, and elegant, with a touch of chocolate, espresso, and cherries in the finish, this will drink well on release. Drink from 2025-2038.

The extremes of the vintage have left their mark on the 2022 La Croix de Gay, a medium to full-bodied, soft, fleshy, low-acid wine evocative of smoked meats, toasty oak and berry compete.

Wide and structured red with a medium to full body and fine-grained, silky tannins. Lingering and deep dark-fruited finish.
