Craggy Range - Le Sol (Gimblett Gravels) - Hawkes Bay 2020

Established in 1998, Craggy Range is a family-owned winery situated in the shadow of the spectacular Te Mata Peak in the premium wine-growing area of Hawke's Bay, New Zealand. When the owners Terry and Mary Peabody set out to start a winery with world-class aspirations, their search quickly brought them to New Zealand. Looking down from Te Mata Peak onto the land where Craggy Range now stands, they envisioned a winery and experience that truly evoked the region's unique landscapes and heritage. The Peabody family then focused on the Gimblett Gravels Winegrowing district in Hawke's Bay and Te Muna Road in Martinborough to produce a collection of iconic wines that speak very much of their place.

Gimblett Gravels

Hawke's bay Gimblett Gravels winegrowing district lies on the ancient bed of the Ngaruroro river, which changed course in 1867 to expose its soils for possible viticulture. Here, the combination of low altitude, the proximity to the sea and the poor stony soils create rich, ripe, yet elegantly structured red wines.

2020 vintage

“2020 is a vintage that, side-by-side with 2019, will be considered the greatest back-to-back in our winery’s history. Truly one to celebrate. The winter of 2019 broke quickly, and immediately we were presented with above-average temperatures and below-average rainfall during spring in both regions. Flowering conditions were near perfect. The ripening period was warm and remarkably consistent and phenolic ripeness was achieved early."
- Julian Grounds, Chief Winemaker

The tasting notes

Deep, dark garnet with a burgundy hue. A plethora of notes leap from the glass– ripe red-blue fruit, boysenberry and blueberry are intertwined with the savoury complexity of black pepper and graphite. The palate is seamless and perfect to a point; voluptuous fruit greets the palate and fills the mouth. However, the exceptionally fine, graphite tannins come racing through and give the wine rarely seen persistence. Without a doubt, one of our finest releases to date.

The 2020 Le Sol is open and attractive on the nose, with layers of blackberry, raspberry, hints of licorice and clove, a whiff of orange peel, black tea and pencil shavings. In the mouth, the wine is silky and full; it expands without being heavy. The flavors cascade and tumble over each other as they reach for the long and elongated finish. It's an incredibly classy, structural, detailed wine of poise and presence. Blackberry and blueberry are distinctly etched into the aftertaste. We know these wines age with grace and eloquence, but it is also wonderful on release. It is worth waiting for, if you are of the patient persuasion. If not, go forth; you won't be disappointed. It fermented with 60% whole bunch and spent 30 to 40 days on the skins (depending on the fermenting vat). This assists with texture. Overextraction is not a problem given the low alcohols. It matured in French puncheons and larger format (Stockinger 2,400 liters). 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

Bright and glossy with subtle and elegant spices, with more red and blue fruit than black. Diffusive and chalky tannins dwell upon the red cherries and plums on the palate, with white pepper and flowers in the streamlined, linear finish. Quite engaging now, but can hold, too.

One of two Craggy Range wines to join the Place de Bordeaux this year alongside the Pinot Noir-based Aroha. Meaty and wild, a sense of roasted meat, smoky and deliberate with a balsamic element too. Bay leaf, cooking herbs and some graphite touches - lots of expression. A full and bold style, but so juicy and succulent, really sucks the cheeks in, makes the mouth water with strawberry, red cherry, plum and raspberry fruit. It's smooth and penetrating but it has such a lovely crushed velvet texture, slightly chalky but full of life and vigour. I like this expression, feels vibrant but also with quite a lot of tension at this point. Nice detail on show in the smoke and florality but all very soft letting the vibrancy show through at this point.

Deep and concentrated, touch of reduction on opening as is fairly typical with Syrah. Earthy overtones, bright acidities, delicate campfire smoke, spiralling upwards through the glass, opening to show earth, dried roses, raspberry puree, liqourice, game and spiced plum. Less floral than this grape often is from the northern Rhone, less powerful than a classic Australian version, this has its own distinct character, and is utterly charming. Harvest April 5-12. 56% whole bunch, 38% new oak.
