Craggy Range, Gimblett Gravels Vineyard - Syrah, Le Sol - Hawkes Bay 2022

Craggy Range, established in 1998, is a family-owned winery located in the Hawke's Bay region of New Zealand, near Te Mata Peak. Founded by Terry and Mary Peabody, the winery was created with a vision of producing world-class wines that reflect the region’s unique landscapes. Focusing on the Gimblett Gravels in Hawke's Bay and Te Muna Road in Martinborough, Craggy Range has built a reputation for crafting iconic wines deeply connected to their terroir.

Gimblett Gravels

Hawke's bay Gimblett Gravels winegrowing district lies on the ancient bed of the Ngaruroro river, which changed course in 1867 to expose its soils for possible viticulture. Here, the combination of low altitude, the proximity to the sea and the poor stony soils create rich, ripe, yet elegantly structured red wines.

The 2022 Vintage:

The vintage of 2022 was defined by an extremely warm December and January. In both regions, up until this point, we’d be tracking as being an average year. However, a considerable temperature spike in these months accelerated the vine growth and, most importantly, physiological ripeness. This was critical when rainfall events occurred during February and March and showed the value of our soils’ free-draining nature.

Tasting notes:

A very dark purple core. Aromas of lavender, black tea, graphite, and mulberry resonate. In the mouth, the wine is very expressive. Umami and floral notes complement, creating a deeply flavourful and energetic palate. Tannins are ultra-fine, silk-laden, and thread in with the dense texture, making an already very approachable release, but will reward with cellaring and age with grace.

Silky and welcoming, the 2022 Le Sol is very moreish, with open-knit textures and approachable fruit flavors of red cherry, plum coulis and cola. Oak lends vanilla and cedar tones to the fruit, but the vintage didn't allow for much expressiveness. The 2022 is a rather restrained, easier style that will give pleasure early.

The 2022 Le Sol follows in a long line of Le Sol Syrah, each expressive of the terroir and its vintage. The wine is lightly framed, highly perfumed, silky in the mouth and clearly, as far as I see it, bears the hallmarks of talented winemaker Julian Grounds, who left Craggy Range in 2023 to pursue another role in Mornington Peninsula, Australia. This wine here is all about pomegranate and pink peppercorn, ripe raspberry, black tea, crushed sea shells and minerals. It's a beautiful wine, possibly as light as I've ever seen it, and I love it for that. The tannins and acidity balance perfectly to create a featherlight and long finish. 13% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

Rich, supple and concentrated, this is from a heritage clone of Syrah brought to New Zealand in the 1840s, located in the stoniest parts of Gimblett Gravels. Takes its time to unfurl and unfold in the glass, with a steely tannic grip and high rose petal and gunsmoke aromatics, followed up with cumin, peach pit, sage and fennel. Deft and savoury, with a slow release that softens into creamy red fruits, and give plenty of time to relax and enjoy the finessed perfume that fills the glass. Where you can approach the Te Muna earlier, I strongly suggest allowing Le Sol four or five years to evolve in the bottle. Director David T Peabody, chief winemaker Julian Grounds, unfined, light filtration, 45% new oak for ageing.

(Gimblett Gravels, Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand; 100% Syrah; hand-harvested in several tries and entirely destemmed; a final yield of 25 hl/ha; pH 3.74; 13% alcohol). Pepper and spice, crushed red berry and red plummy fruits, again nicely a point – one has the sensation of biting into a ripe juicy plum and the sense of the tannins from under the skin. Fluid and dynamic, a Syrah very much in a Pinot Noir style with gentle extraction allowing a more detailed focus on aspects of the varietal often crowded out by less finely focussed and precise vinification. I like the subtle creaminess that you don’t often find with Syrah. Quite a unique style and it’s really worth seeking this out.
