Couvent des Jacobins (BIO-ORGANIC) - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2023

Couvent des Jacobins, a jewel nestled in the World Heritage city of Saint-Émilion

Couvent des Jacobins is among those places whose soul and identity linger in the memory of those who visit it. Spanning nearly seven centuries, from the Medieval period to the present day, this site has transitioned from the hands of the Jacobin Friars to the Jean and Joinaud families. Celebrating the art of viticulture, Couvent des Jacobins embodies the rich legacy of the Classified Growth wine estates in Saint-Émilion.

As of the 2020 vintage, the wines from this estate proudly carry the certification of 'Organic Farming'.

The 2023 Vintage:

Tasting Notes:

Compared to 2022, the color extraction was more gradual this year, with macerations ranging from 22 to 35 days depending on the plots. At this stage of aging, Couvent is reminiscent of the 2008 and 2016 vintages due to its density, aromatic notes, mouthfeel, body, and beautiful tension.

A great freshness in the mid-palate suggests an excellent balance for the years to come in the cellar, while preserving its character and richness. This balanced and fresh wine will delight lovers of elegant and dynamic wines.

Currants, roasted spices, graphite, dark plums and a hint of cocoa nibs on the nose. Medium- to full-bodied on the palate, with firm, chalky tannins and a long, juicy finish. Polished and very well balanced. Mostly merlot with 11% cabernet franc and 5% petit verdot. From organically grown grapes. Drink now or hold.

The 2023 Couvent Des Jacobins is based on 84% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit Verdot that's still resting in 40% new oak. It's a deep purple-hued, almost inky 2023 revealing a gorgeous nose of ripe black cherries, roasted herbs, spicy oak, and chocolate. It brings ample richness and depth, has building, ripe tannins, and a great finish. I love its overall level of concentration, and it's a beautiful wine that I'd put up with the finest I've tasted from this château.

Couvent des Jacobins (Saint Émilion; 84% Merlot; 11% Cabernet Franc; 5% Petit Verdot; a final yield of 40 hl/ha; tasted first at the Association des Grands Crus Classés at Dassault, then with Xavier Jean in the historic cloister of the Couvent itself). An amazing ascent to the summit is underway here and this is still a work in progress, but it’s perhaps the finest I’ve yet tasted from Couvent, with Thomas Duclos playing an important role as consultant. Incense, rose petals, wisteria and peonies, a little violet and a gracious plump stone and dark berry fruit – damsons and blueberries, a little bramble too; a nice combination of cracked peppercorns too. The Petit Verdot brings a little strictness of the mid-palate and maybe needs a little more time to fully bed in, but this is complex, layered, superb in its tannin management and incredibly refined. Bravo. The best yet from here and a veritable coup de coeur.

Round, fruity rich, and dark, with loads of chocolate covered black cherries, licorice, flowers, and spice. The ripe, sweet, round, creamy finish really works this year. The wine blends 84% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit Verdot. Drink from 2027-2040. 91-93 Pts.

Intense, spicy, high levels of freshness and rosebud, good aromatics, this starts out at full intensity but but opens up nicely through the mid palate, and shows energy, juice and balance.

The 2023 Couvent des Jacobins is an elegant, silky Saint-Émilion. Crushed flowers, spice, lavender and mint are some of the many notes that flesh out. Succulent contours and lifted, floral overtones wrap it all together. This stylish Saint-Émilion is all charm. Tasted two times.

The 2023 Couvent des Jacobins has an attractive bouquet with blackberry, raspberry and light floral scents complemented by a touch of cedar. The oak is neatly integrated here. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly lactic, smooth entry. Possessing moderate depth and fine tannins, it’s quite seamless on the finish, although it just lacks a bit of complexity and terroir expression. Maybe it will develop more personality during its élevage?

Dark ruby, opaque core, purple reflections, brightening on the rim. Dark forest berryish fruit with a tobacco and herbal savouriness in the background, orange zest. Medium complexity, ripe cherries, vivid tannins, somewhat dry in the finish, a hint of nougat in the aftertaste.

Composed of 84% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit Verdot, the 2023 Couvent des Jacobins is deep garnet-purple colored with notes of blackberry pie, preserved plums, and raspberry coulis hopping from the glass, leading to hints of sassafras, black pepper, and underbrush. Medium-bodied, the palate is soft and delicate with just enough freshness and a peppery finish.

The 2023 Couvent des Jacobins offers up attractive aromas of dark berries and cherries mingled with hints of pencil shaving, licorice and petals. Medium to full-bodied, seamless and layered, with velvety tannins and good mid-palate density, it displays plenty of potential.

Density and fullness to this, but at the same time it is tight and formed with creamy tannins that envelop the wine. Medium to full body. Pretty blackberry and black-cherry character. Very pure. Well balanced, but so structured as well. Merlot with 11% cabernet franc and 5% petit verdot. Mostly limestone. Tasted twice.
