Couvent des Jacobins (BIO-ORGANIC) - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2022

Couvent des Jacobins, a jewel nestled in the World Heritage city of Saint-Émilion

Couvent des Jacobins is among those places whose soul and identity linger in the memory of those who visit it. From the Middle Ages to today, from the Jacobin Friars to the Jean and Joinaud families, Couvent des Jacobins has spent almost 7 centuries celebrating winemaking, an exceptional terroir, and the great tradition of the Classified Growth wine estates of Saint-Émilion.

The wines from the domaine have been officially 'Organic-Farming' certified since vintage 2020.

The 2022 vintage

Vintage 2022 will stay among the most unique in the history of Couvent. And among the most fascintating to craft for us winegrowers. Because of the warm weather throughout the year and a dry summer. But also because of the everlasting attention of our team to preserve moisture in the vineyard and limit evaporation.

Tasting notes

The blend hints at a powerful and rich vintage, with a floral and black fruit bouquet. A juicy and creamy mouth and a vivacious and fresh energy from the cabernets francs. Multilayered.

The 2023 Couvent des Jacobins has turned out very well. Evoking a pure, perfumed bouquet of dark berries, mulberries, iris and lilac mingled with menthol notes, it's medium to full-bodied, layered and seamless with an enrobing texture from a fleshy core of fruit framed by velvety tannins. Concluding with long, penetrating and chalky dry extracts, it offers plenty of immediate charm, yet it also has the structure to age well. As readers may remember, this is a blend of 82% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot.

Black cherries, loamy, damp earth, tobacco, and flowery incense notes all emerge from the 2022 Couvent Des Jacobins, a ripe, opulent, sexy 2022 that brings beautiful complexity and richness, a round, layered, seamless mouthfeel, and a great finish. It's a ripe, unctuous, yet still classic, complex beauty from this estate, as well as the finest vintage I've tasted from them. Based on 82% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc, and 4% Petit Verdot, drink bottles any time over the coming two decades.

The 2022 Couvent des Jacobins still has that "punchy" bouquet with powerful blackberry, boysenberry and espresso aromas joining the fray. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins that perhaps needs more precision to come through on the grippy finish. Give this time in bottle.

Creamy blackberries, bergamot and milk chocolate with a reductive touch to the fruit and sweet spices, resulting in a light lactic feel that should integrate soon. Medium- to full-bodied on the palate with dusty tannins that unwind nicely before a long and melted finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink from 2027.

The 2022 Couvent des Jacobins is quite the powerhouse. Blackberry, gravel, spice, leather, incense and cloves add to an impression of virile, somber power that is matched by the wine's tannic heft. Couvent des Jacobins is not a subtle wine, but it expresses its power well. Lifted floral and savory overtones extend the finish.

Gorgeous aromatic intensity on the nose, fragrant and open, really inviting. Salty, mineral tang is at the fore giving quite a lean and clean expression with purity rather than overt density or plushness. Tannins are slick and fine, giving a relatively straight and direct frame while the black fruit has energy and drive. Lovely expression, easy to enjoy still with bite and tension and a touch of density on the finish. Crystalline and clean. Maybe a touch watery.

The aroma of Couvent des Jacobins 2022 is clear, delicate, and lively, with a fruity and tangy scent of sour jujube and raspberries that gently wraps around the tongue and veils the taste buds with an exquisite silk veil. Compared to other Saint-Émilion wines, the spicy notes of Couvent des Jacobins stand out, and the layered complexity of flavors is more pronounced. The alcohol sensation at the finish of the 2022 vintage is milder than that of the 2019 and 2020 vintages, and the terroir characteristics of limestone and clay are more precise. One can confidently anticipate a more remarkable expression once it is bottled.

The 2022 Couvent des Jacobins has a punchy bouquet with blueberry and cassis aromas. There's a touch of espresso in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, slightly backward and structured at the moment. It doesn't quite kick on toward the finish. Still thoroughly enjoyable.

Brushed velvet tannins, plenty of tannic grip and a spicy core, this has the character of the vintage, with an architecture that is a little chunky and takes its time to stretch out, but once it relaxes, the finish is long and refreshing, with edges of rosemary, sage, safffron and slate. Enjoyable. 45% new oak

Composed of 82% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc, and 4% Petit Verdot, the 2022 Couvent des Jacobins displays an opaque garnet-purple color. It explodes with bombastic notes of juicy plums, black cherry preserves, and mulberries, followed by wafts of licorice, violets, and dark chocolate. The full-bodied palate is laden with black fruit preserves, supported by velvety tannins and compelling tension, finishing long and opulent. A gorgeous expression of the vintage!

Deep in color, black cherries, licorice, chocolate, and plums. The wine is rich, chocolately, and packed with dark red fruits, and freshness with a hint of espresso in the lingering, sensual finish. Drink from 2025-2040.
