Coutet - Barsac 2020

First built as a fortress, Château Coutet still bears the stamp of its medieval origins. The square tower with its battlements, located in the centre of the courtyard, is typical of military constructions of the time.

Château Coutet was recognised as a Classified First Growth in the 1855 classification, but the lands around Barsac, among the coldest in the area, had already been planted with vines for centuries.

Marcel Baly and two of his sons, Philippe and Dominique, became the new owners of Château Coutet in 1977. Originally from Alsace, the family subsequently expanded overseas, especially in the United States. With zeal and determination, they set about the task of renewing the vineyard and the winery buildings. Today, Aline Baly is the third generation to join the family business.

In 1994, the two brothers concluded an agreement with Baron Philippe de Rothschild SA. The winemaking team is now advised by the technical staff from Château Mouton Rothschild.

Tasting Notes
This is an extremely delicate vintage. The first tastings reveal a particularly fresh wine, marked by floral notes of lily of the valley and grapefruit flowers.

The attention-seeking nose grabs you due to all of its honeysuckle, candied pineapple, orange blossoms, apricots, and mango drizzled with honey, and spice. The wine is perfectly balanced between all of its sweetness and vibrancy, leaving you with ample freshness to provide lift and cut to all of its honeyed, tropical fruits. Drink from 2023-2050.

Sunny and decisive in the glass showing notes of yellow peaches, turmeric, papaya, pineapple and ginger. Full bodied, creamy and tasty in the sip showing remarkable density and a linear, decidedly flavourful finale. Drink now or hold.

The 2020 Coutet is much more refined and light on its feet than it was from barrel. Tangerine peel, mint, passionfruit, white flowers and a hint of marzipan all grace this airy, wonderfully refined Barsac.

The 2020 Coutet has an intense bouquet with dried honey, saffron, dandelion and light crushed stone aromas, nicely focused and fairly complex. Quintessential Coutet. The palate is very well balanced with a decent thread of acidity, taut and fresh, not as powerful as Doisy-Daëne yet with admirable tension on the ginger-tinged finish. Very fine.

This is attractive with an array of spiced dark fruit, cedar and wet stones running through it. Medium body with a toned, meaty structure. Flavorful finish. Drink or hold.

Intense and pure nose with plenty of layers, good depth despite its youth. Fresh apricot, pineapple, fine toast with vanilla, fresh butter and confit de citron. The palate has great density and weight with fine extract and good oak integration, a fairly high sweetness but a classic Barsac freshness adds plenty of lift, gorgeous young fruit with saffran, hazelnut and floral notes, textured and viscous with a very long and persistent finish. Something great in the making.

The 2020 Coutet is wonderfully dense and creamy from start to finish. Dried pear, marzipan, white flowers, mint and tangerine oil build in this super-expressive, deep Barsac. The 2020 has so much to offer.

Aline Baly kindly furnished me with background information on the 2020 Coutet. "The first sorting occurred on September 16 and 17 to harvest the botrytis resulting from the thunderstorms of August 15," she told me. "The second and third passeage were organized quickly, as the climatic conditions were becoming unfavorable. The teams were ready to harvest within the hour, as soon as a weather window emerged. This second phase of harvest finally took place on September 23 before a thunderstorm that resulted in a cumulative rainfall of 38mm. Then the harvest continued September 29 and 30 before 77mm of precipitation. A new passeage was initiated, initially, on October 8 and 9, but 140mm of rain accumulated since the first sort strongly impacted concentration levels, encouraging us to be patient until October 12. We resumed the harvest under normal conditions until October 22 but with a very capricious forecast. A fifth and sixth sort followed one another, and the harvest ended on October 26.” Coutet has a very perfumed and more floral bouquet compared to, say, the de Fargues that happens to precede it, aromas of dandelion and apricot mingling with saffron and light chamomile. The palate is well balanced, very pure and lightly spiced, displaying a tang of marmalade and quince toward a finish that is marked by Coutet’s trademark acidic bite. Quintessentially Coutet, this should give 25–30 years of drinking pleasure.

Bright, yellow gold colour, with citrus, apricot, pineapple and a ton of mango fruits on the palate. Silky texture with spikes of lime juice bringing pep and definition. Saffron and white pepper add even more lift through the finish, this is excellent and easy to recommend.

Lemon meringue pie, honeysuckle, candied pineapple, orange blossoms, flowers and spice create an enthralling perfume. Sweet, yet zesty, rich and racy with a shot of cinnamon and honey-slathered yellow tropical fruits and vanilla that linger. This decadent sweet treat works because of its balancing acidity that keeps everything fresh and vibrant. 94-96
