Couhins - Pessac-Léognan 2023

The estate

Cru Classé de Graves owned by the "INRA" (National Institute of Agronomic Research) since 1968, Château Couhins participates in the writing of tomorrow's viticulture, rich in all its societal and environmental stakes, but also benefits, in preview, from the latest sustainable and precision viticultural techniques. Contributing to the building of knowledge, putting this knowledge to the test in practice, both in the vineyard and in the cellars, and then passing it on to the professionals in the wine industry, these are the missions that bring the Château team together.

Since the 2020 vintage the estate is officially in conversion to Organic Farming.

A blend of 51% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Petit Verdot, the 2023 Couhins reveals a fresh, lively bouquet of raspberries, dark wild berries, mulberries and flowers, followed by a fleshy and ample palate with velvety tannins, a gourmand core of fruit and a long, delicate finish. Owned by INRAE (the French National Institute of Agricultural Research), this estate has steadily enhanced the quality of its wines over the years.

The 2023 Château Couhins is based on 51% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 4% Petit Verdot and it's still resting in one-third new French oak. Bright black cherries, leather, leafy herbs, and chocolate notes all define the bouquet, and it's medium-bodied on the palate, with firmer tannins, nicely integrated acidity, and solid overall mid-palate depth and concentration.

Black cherries, chocolate, flowers, and espresso form the character here. The medium-bodied palate is round, chewy, and loaded with black cherries, peppery spice, dark chocolate, espresso, and crisp red currants. Bright, and chewy in the finish, give it a few years in the bottle and it promises to be even better. The wine blends 50% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot. 14 ABV. Drink from 2027-2039. 90-92 Pts.

Inky colour, brambled autumnal fruits, pretty intense overall, this is good quality, has plenty of appellation typicity, and is a clear step up from recent vintages at this estate. Alix Bern is the winemaker, from the Savoie region. 33% new oak for ageing.

Dark ruby, purple reflections. Fresh plums, a hint of blackberry confit, fine herbal savouriness, orange zest in the background. Juicy, ripe cherries, fine tannins, good freshness, well-balanced, a lively food wine with a subtle nougat finish.

Very pretty center-palate of ripe yet cool cabernet sauvignon fruit. Medium body, integrated tannins and a fresh finish. Solid and curated already.
