Cos Labory - Saint-Estèphe 2018

Cos Labory, a new era has begun

The name of the estate comes from its geographical location on the Cos hill and the name of François Labory, who was the first owner until 1845. Mr. d'Estournel then acquired it before selling it again to an English banker, Charles Martyns in 1852. The property was finally taken over by George Weber in the 1930's, who bequeathed it to his daughter and son-in-law, François Audoy in 1959.

In 2023, Michel Reybier acquires Cos Labory, thus reestablishing the historic estate of the the Maharaja of Saint-Estèphe. The new owner opens a new chapter of the history of Château Cos Labory and will make sure to “perpetuate the estate’s independence while pursuing the level of excellence made possible by this great terroir of Saint-Estèphe."

The 2018 Cos Labory is fabulous. An extra kick of richness from the warm year and a bit more Petit Verdot than usual result in a Cos Labory that is wonderfully savory, powerful and layered. Black cherry, plum, cloves, chocolate and dried herbs build as this potent, exotically ripe Saint-Estèphe opens in the glass. Today, the 2018 is dark, brooding and in need of cellaring. Cos Labory is a bit wild, but that just adds to its considerable allure.

The 2018 Cos Labory has a deep garnet-purple color, bursting from the glass with bold notes of warm cassis, blackberry compote and Morello cherries, plus suggestions of roses, unsmoked cigars and tree bark. The medium-bodied palate has a very sturdy frame of firm, grainy tannins and tons of freshness supporting the rather delicately played fruit, finishing long and earthy/minerally. The structure stands out a little now, which I enjoy, but for those preferring softer, rounder expressions, give this a good 3-5 years in the cellar and drink it over the next 15-20 years.

Lots of rich red and black currants, tobacco, savory spice, and new leather notes emerge from the 2018 Château Cos Labory, a medium-bodied Saint-Estèphe with terrific overall balance, ripe, velvety tannins, lots of character, and outstanding length. It's well worth cellaring and drinking any time over the coming 15+ years.

Medium bodied, fresh, bright, lifted red fruits, spice and earth pop up in the nose easily. The wine has energy, elegance and loads of red currants, red plums and herbs on the palate. The finish delivers more of those gorgeous red, sweet, chewy fruits. This is a big step up from previous vintages. I am liking it a lot!

The 2018 Cos-Labory fulfills the promise that it showed in barrel – hoorah! It has a lovely, well-defined bouquet of blackberry, cedar and sous-bois scents, gently unfolding in the glass. The oak here is nicely integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, a well-judged line of acidity and a nicely proportioned finish that maybe just lacks a bit of flair. But otherwise, it’s just about the best Cos Labory that I have tasted.

Dunkles Rubingranat, violette Reflexe, zarte Randaufhellung.

The 2018 Cos-Labory has a cohesive nose with blackberry, bilberry, cedar and earthy aromas, hints of black olive developing with time. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, good fruit concentration with well integrated oak. There is a slight shortness on the finish, but other than that, this is certainly one of the best wines from Cos-Labory that I have tasted in recent years. Keep it up.

Fruit ''sombre'', assez intense qui précède une bouche tannique et fraîche, aux tanins un peu à nu. Pour le moment il manque un peu de chair mais l'élevage pourrait le garnir.

Medium-bodied, round, forward and with a nice level of ripeness to the fruit and accompanied by spice and tobacco leaf, the wine really works well with this vintage.

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2018 Cos Labory is a little reduced to start, unfurling to display notions of baked blackcurrants, blackberry preserves and boysenberries with touches of sautéed herbs, smoked meats and tar. Medium to full-bodied, it has a firm, fine-grained frame and background freshness supporting the elegant black fruit and savory layers, finishing on a lingering mineral note.

Packed equally with tannins and black fruits, this ripe wine is dense and solid. Its acidity and freshness give a juicy edge to the wine, showing good potential for aging.

The core of fruit in this wine is all there, together with a polished tannin frame that provides form and refinement.
