Contador, Alma - Rioja 2021

Benjamín Romeo, an acclaimed  Rioja winemaker

Son, grandson and great-grandson of winemakers, Benjamín Romeo is heir to a long winemaking tradition. Born in San Vicente de la Sonsierra, in Rioja, he has been making wines there since 1995. San Vicente stands out for its exceptional location, sheltered by the Sierra de Cantabria. With vineyards spread from the mountains to the Ebro River, San Vicente de la Sonsierra is a dream setting for producing complex and balanced wines. The diversity of soils and microclimates and the long winemaking tradition of this unique corner of Rioja are arguments that distinguish the features of Contador wines -the winery has more than 70 plots in this environment- and have allowed it to place itself among the world's wine elite, with such significant recognitions as the 100 Parker points obtained in two consecutive vintages (2004 and 2005).

Bodega Contador's new wine is born with the vocation of highlighting the richness and uniqueness of San Vicente de la Sonsierra as the origin of the best Rioja wines. Alma de Contador 2021 has been made by blending grapes from three different parcels that are part of the Sonserrano terroir. These plots are located at a maximum distance that reaches a radius of 3km from the winery, which allows extremely fast reception and processing of the grapes. Also, for this wine a special selection of clusters has been made to only produce the highest quality ones.

Benjamín Romeo has once again signed a wine of exceptional characteristics. Alma 2021 is a remarkable red wine which faithfully reflects the soul of a privileged origin: San Vicente de la Sonsierra.

Tasting Notes:

Alma 2021 is very bright and dense red-violet color. The nose is deep, intense and elegant. It shows mineral and balsamic herbs aromas. Also, red and black fruits with spicy notes and a touch of toasted. With wood fine and present. It has a good evolution “with future”. In the mouth it is subtle and powerful at the same time. Well balanced in terms of maturity and freshness. Final is very long and fresh. Bulky and tasty.

Oaky. Rich. Spicy. Quite exotic. Meaty, with a saline-ferrous bloody quality. A touch of charcuterie. Darker berry fruits are prominent, especially as the oak starts to fade. Pure. Radiant. Sour cherries. Japanese sour plums. Brambles. Blackberries. Mulberries. Five spice. Distinct; interesting; engaging. Yet there is a slight dryness to the tannins and the wood returns just at the end. It feels somewhat front- and back-ended by the oak (like a book shelf!). What I find in the middle I like rather more.

The 2021 Alma Contador, produced with 91% Tempranillo and 9% Garnacha, feels very ripe, and the label states 15% alcohol. It has notes of stewed fruit, dark spices, smoke and toast. It has a full-bodied palate with abundant tannins and is very powerful and concentrated but with all the components in good balance. This is going to require a little more time in bottle and/or powerful food. 14,000 bottles produced. It was bottled after 20 months in new French oak barrels.

Dark fruit register from the opening moments - a hum of bilberry, blackberry, cassis, with tobacco, sandalwood, vanilla bean, sweet and refined tannins, dried herb uplift through the finish. Oak is evident, but it works, and is part of the Rioja signature. Second vintage, Benjamin Romeo Hilera winemaker and owner from 5.5ha of 70-year-old vines set across three plots. Benjamin Romeo Hilera winemaker and director.
