Confession - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2023

Time, steady perseverance and care have enabled Jean-Philippe Janoueix to build up a fine portfolio of wine estates. Château La Confession’s seven and a half hectares (18.5 acres) of clay-limestone soils lie upon a fine slope. At harvest time, you can appreciate the cool, calm mornings, the gentle rustling of the vines and the suspense of the winery. The Janoueix family seeks to draw out the true character of their terroir, working the fruit with finesse and care. Oak is used subtly to accompany without overwhelming the fruit, allowing for the great terroir to express itself. Purity is their constant goal.

Fruity and refreshing but precise, with aromas of red cherries, currants, fine spices and hints of wasabi, minerals and tobacco. Vibrant and refined, with a medium body, bright acidity and crunchy, fine-grained tannins. Al dente and expressive, with a long, linear finish. Drink now or hold.

Spicy red and black plums, tobacco, spring flowers, and smoky oak all emerge from the 2023 Château La Confession, a medium-bodied, nicely balanced, classic, old school-styled Saint-Emilion that has ripe, foursquare tannins and a good finish. It's clearly well-made and I suspect will benefit from 2-4 years of bottle age. The blend is 70% Merlot, 27% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Malbec, aging in 50% new oak, with 20% in amphora.

La Confession (Saint Émilion; tasted at Belgrave). Newly promoted to the ranks of the Grands Crus Classés, but not present at the Association’s tasting at Dassault, it was worth tracking this down! Juicy with plum and blackcurrant fruits, imparting a pleasing purity. Crystalline and juicy with a sleek and sinuous mid-palate. Quite saline in its minerality and with fine-grained grippy limestone tannins. The acidity is a little elevated, which turns this a little stern on the finish. But it’s refreshing in its juiciness.

Flowers, spice, smoke, black raspberries, licorice, cherries, and plums shoot from the glass. Medium-bodied, silky, fresh, and lifted, the fruits are clean, pure, bright, and sweet. There is length, definition, and complexity. With Thomas Duclos as the new consultant, this is a property to watch. The wine blends 70% Merlot, 27% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Malbec. 13.5% ABV. Drink from 2027-2045. 92-94 Pts.

Medium intensity ruby, highly charged grilled oak threatens the bright berry fruit, although there is a gorgeous pumice stone character that gives a nod to the limestone soils.

The 2023 La Confession is a powerful, dense wine. A virile, heady Saint-Émilion, La Confession is packed with dark red cherry, plum, scorched earth, gravel, menthol, licorice and chocolate. It offers tons of intensity and resonance in the early going. Bright acids and beams of supporting tannin extend the finish. Tasted two times.

Aromas of dark berries, cherries, rose petals and licorice introduce the 2023 La Confession, a medium to full-bodied, fleshy, layered wine that concludes with a mineral finish. This estate on the plateau and north slope of Saint-Émilion has stopped deleafing and green harvesting in the vineyards and is now blending earlier and refining cooperage choices in the cellar.

A juicy wine with plenty of berries and a floral note. Medium body. Some good fruit at the core.
