Medium-bodied, soft, silky, fresh and fruity with a sweet core of red cherries and plums on the mid-palate that carry through to the cinnamon-accented finish. If you do not already know, Le Comte de Malartic is the new name for the second wine of Malartic La Graviere. Drink from 2023-2032.

The 2020 Le Comte de Malartic has a crisp green apple, nettle and gooseberry scented nose that betrays the Sauvignon Blanc (83% of the blend). The palate is fresh and vibrant on the entry with notes of pear and peach skin, fine depth with a slightly waxy/resinous finish. Fine.

Lots of crushed stone, redcurrant and bark aromas and flavors. Some iodine. Medium to full body with soft and round tannins and a savory finish. Needs three or four years to come together. Second wine. Best after 2025.

The 2020 Le Comte de Malartic-Lagravière, formerly known as La Réserve, is a soft, easygoing second wine. Cedar, sweet pipe tobacco, mint and floral accents lift a core of sweet red berry fruit. Le Comte is a blend of young vine fruit and parcels that don't go into the Grand Vin. Tasted two times.

Lots of ripe darker fruits (blackberries/cassis), leafy herbs, and chocolate as well as classic Graves notes of gravelly earth emerge from the 2020 Le Comte De Malartic, which is medium to full-bodied, round, and up-front on the palate, with a soft, forward texture. Despite its up-front approachability, it should drink well for at least a good decade or more.

Serious second wine with loads of blackberry and dark-earth character. Some bark, too. It’s full and layered. Lots of flavor and structure. Well done.

With such low yields, they have done an excellent job of keeping the family signature going between first and second wine. Juicy black fruits, a little closed down on the finish as with many second wines in the vintage, but easy to recommend as a medium-term slice of Pessac-Léognan pleasure. First year with new name, second year with Eric Boissenot consultant.
