Clos Marsalette Rouge - Pessac-Léognan 2023

The Von Neipperg Family, a history intertwined with winegrowing

Stephan von Neipperg is the guardian of some 800 years of winemaking tradition, and today manages with passion and talent the various Bordeaux estates acquired by his father in 1971: Château Canon La Gaffelière and La Mondotte, 1er Grands Crus Classés B de Saint-Emilion, Clos de l'Oratoire, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classé, Clos Marsalette, Pessac-Léognan, and Château d'Aiguilhe, Castillon - Côte de Bordeaux.

Ably assisted by a team of professionals, he has brought the wines from these châteaux to the pinnacle of quality. The upcoming generation, also deeply attached to the terroir, is preparing to perpetuate the family vocation...!

Clos Marsalette, Pessac-Leognan

Located in Martillac, in the Pessac-Léognan appellation, Clos Marsalette is jointly owned by Count Stephan von Neipperg and Didier Miqueu.

This vineyard sits magnificently on gravelly rises deposited aeons ago by the Garonne.

Clos Marsalette's vineyard which covers an area of 12 hectares for the red wine is looked after expertly in order to produce a wine reflecting the typicity of this Terroir. Clos Marsalette red is round, fruity, and distinguished.

The 2023 Clos Marsalette has a light nose with brambly red fruit, undergrowth and touches of white pepper that just require a little more vigor. The palate is medium-bodied with light tannins, but it misses some body in the middle, too light on the finish where you want it to make more of an impression. Tasty but not long-term.

A fresh nose with a touch of minerals to the brioche and some ripe quince and lemon curd. Good energy and acidity on the palate, showing medium body and generous fruit. Lightly phenolic with a bright finish. A blend of 56% sauvignon blanc and 44% semillon. Drink now.

A blend of close to equal parts Merlot and Cabernet Franc (there's a splash of Sauvignon), the 2023 Clos Marsalette sports a deep ruby hue and reveals a beautiful nose of ripe raspberry and cassis fruit as well as ripe tobacco and smoky, earthy nuances. It's medium-bodied, balanced, has a good sense of elegance, and remarkable purity.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2023 Clos Marsalette Rouge slips out of the glass with easy-going scents of juicy ripe blueberries, mulberries, and iris with touches of anise, fertile loam, and cumin seed. The medium-bodied palate is fresh and light on its feet, with satiny tannins and a lively backbone, finishing on a spicy note. The blend is 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 43% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc.

Beautiful rich plum in colour; vibrant and enticing. Enjoyable on the palate also, huge amounts of pummice stone tannins that give grip and tension, and hold the creamy black fruits in place. Tannic frame is highly charged, but there is pep and cheer from this Neipperg estate in Pessac Léognan.

The 2023 Clos Marsalette is terrific. I especially admire its aromatic energy and vibrancy. Red-toned fruit, blood orange, spice and new leather all meld together in an understated Clos Marsalette that is all class. This is beautifully done.

The 2023 Clos Marsalette was picked from September 12 to 22 at 45hL/ha. This has a fresh, marine-influenced bouquet, with touches of oyster shell infusing the black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with a fleshy opening and a granular texture. The soft, slightly tart finish pulls up a bit short, but it has a sense of charm.

Dark ruby, purple reflections, subtle ochre rim. Ripe plum fruit, nuances of fine oak and nougat, candied orange zest. Medium body, fine red berryish fruit, fresh struc- ture, ripe tannins, subtle fruitiness, elegant and animating, a multi-faceted food wine.

The 2023 Clos Marsalette, a blend of 43% Merlot, 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Cabernet Franc matured for 25% in new oak, exhales a delicate, fruity bouquet of dark berries, cherries, violets and spices. Moderately weighted and elegant, it’s fleshy and dynamic with good depth of fruit, supple tannins and a long, elegant finish. This is a real success in Von Neipperg’s range.
