Clos des Jacobins - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2022

Clos des Jacobins, a historic Grand Cru Classé in Saint-Emilion

Clos des Jacobins is located at the entrance to the medieval village in the heart of Saint-Emilion’s great terroirs. It takes its name from the Dominican monks known as “Jacobins” who lived on the outskirts of the Saint-Emilion village and used the farm buildings to accommodate pilgrims on their way to or from Santiago de Compostela. They farmed the vineyard to produce their wine, which provided them with most of their income.

Since the 17th century, the homogeneous vineyard has extended over 8,3 hectares in a single block surrounding the cellars. These vines are situated at the foot of the Saint-Emilion slope, where its clay soils are enhanced by the limestone scree that has eroded from the plateau above. This special location and its south-facing orientation provide a unique, early-ripening and generous terroir. Clos des Jacobins has been a Classified Growth since official classification began in Saint-Emilion in 1954.

Clos des Jacobins 2022 is a revelation: its texture is supple, its structure harmonious, and the trace of oak is no longer messy. In just two years, Clos des Jacobins has changed dramatically and it has left me surprised. Thanks to the outstanding water retention capacity of clay-limestone soil, this wine’s fruity flavors remain crisp and juicy, dancing elegantly with notes of hawthorn cake, raspberries, and peonies. The acidity is smooth yet leaves a sweet and lingering finish, expressing the terroir of Clos des Jacobins clearly. This is the Clos des Jacobins I’ve been waiting for, and I’m excited to see more such creations in the future.

Plenty of impact on the opening, sweet damson and raspberry, manages to retain a sappiness to the fruit despite the concentrated inky depths of espresso, cocoa bean, sandalwood and tar. Magali and Thibault Decoster are owners at this 8.5ha estate. 90% new oak.

The 2022 Clos des Jacobins is impressive, and it is safely up with the finest releases I’ve tasted from this château. Deep ruby/purple-hued, with a gorgeous perfume of spicy red and black fruits, chalky earth, and spice, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a round, lush, powerful mouthfeel, velvety tannins, and outstanding length. It needs air to show at its best, so throw this in a decanter if drinking any time soon. It will ideally be given 3-4 years of bottle age, and it’s going to still be drinking beautifully at age 20.

The 2022 Clos des Jacobins has quite a ripe and opulent bouquet featuring a mixture of red and blueberry fruit aromas. It's a little oaky though here it is proportionate to the fruit. The palate is medium-bodied and quite plummy, with ripe blackberry and mulberry fruit tones. It just needs a little more restraint on the finish.

Fine wood spices with rich dark cherries and smoked herbs. A touch of hazelnut chocolate too. Flavorful, full-bodied and fine-grained on the palate with a wealth of dusty tannins. Densely packed and long. Needs three more years to let the wood integrate. Try in 2029.

The 2022 Clos des Jacobins is a wine of imposing depth yet also fine balance. Black cherry, plum, espresso, new leather, lavender and spice are all finely cut in a Saint-Émilion that offers an intriguing mix of body and energy. I would give this a few years in bottle, as the tannins are a bit imposing today. There's room to grow here. This is very nicely done.

Fresh and lifted, a really lovely elegance to this despite clear concentration and very ripe full tannins that fill the mouth completely. Grip and tenison, a lot of life and forward motion, feels compelling and so well handled. Juicy but serious and complete, a lot to like here with linearity, compactness, detail and focus. Really great, maybe just missing a touch of acidity. But there's a lot to like here.

Love the dark berry fruits, blackberry, damson, cocoa bean, espresso, velvety texture to the tannins, smoky, sweet damson, muscular tannins heading toward too much but it has a charming orange peel and lemongrass edge that keeps things in line, and there is a lovely balance beteen intensity and freshness. Enjoyable, very much in the vintage spirit in terms of colour and character, but has sinew and finesse. Magali and Thibault Decoster are owners at this 8.5ha estate. Tasted twice. 90% new oak.

The 2022 Clos des Jacobins offers up copious dark fruit leather, tobacco, incense, espresso and chocolate. This ample, concentrated Saint-Émilion is not exactly restrained, but it has much to offer. Élevage will be critical in preserving freshness.

The 2022 Clos Des Jacobins is an up-front, fleshy, forward barrel sample offering plenty of red and black fruits, some leafy herbs, leather, and loamy earth nuances, medium to full body, and ripe tannins in a balanced, undeniably delicious style that I suspect will drink nicely right out of the gate.

Flowers, incense, licorice, espresso, and red berries work together perfectly in the nose, and on the palate. The wine is medium-bodied, elegant, soft, and creamy in texture, finishing with silky tannins, and sweet, red fruits on the back end. Drink from 2025-2040.

A juicy wine with chocolate, berries and some hazelnut character. Medium body. Juicy finish. Lots of flavor. Chewy. Plenty of potential. 85% merlot and the rest cabernet franc.
