A strong effort, the 2008 was made from tiny yields of 28.5 hectoliters per hectare, and attained 14% natural alcohol. It reveals sweet licorice, black currant and blackberry fruit notes intermixed with truffle and asphalt characteristics in its pure, rich, opulent, full-bodied personality. One of the finest St.-Emilions of the vintage, it is far more accessible than the 2010 and should continue to drink well for 15-20 years. Drink 2011-2031

Dunkles Rubingranat, jugendliche Reflexe, violetter Rand. In der Nase reife Waldeerfrucht, zart nach Honig, dezenter Dörrobsttouch. Am Gaumen saftig, süß und rund, etwas weitmaschig, gut integrierte Tannine, Erdbeerkonfit, Orangen im Nachhall, zart pfeffrige Würze im Rückgeschmack.

Deep purple. Fruit-driven aromas of ripe raspberry and blackberry, complicated by milk chocolate and a hint of leather. Fresh and fruity, with hints of licorice and cayenne pepper mingling with the red fruit flavors. Not especially concentrated but finishes floral and persistent. This property employs two of the keenest minds of the Right Bank as consultants, Stephane Derenoncourt and Jean-Claude Berrouet, and thus one can't help but expect greatness to come.

The harvest ran from October 9-20, and the 2008 Clos Fourtet tips the scales at 13% natural alcohol. A blend of 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Cabernet Franc, it exhibits an inky/purple color along with notes of pen ink, blackberry liqueur, and espresso roast, sensationally concentrated layers of pure black fruits, a full-bodied, powerful style, crisp acids, dense fruit, and ripe tannins. This brilliant 2008 may merit an even higher score after additional time in wood. It will evolve for 20-25 years.

This is very pure on the nose with cassis, plum, boysenberry and just a faint hint of under-ripe fruit. The palate is full-bodied, assertive with robust tannins, a touch of spice with black cherry, pomegranate and a touch of graphite. Good length. It lacks a little grace but it makes its presence known. Hopefully those tannins will integrate with bottle age. Tasted April 2009.

Couleur rouge sombre, de bonne intensité. Nez fruité, de type mûr, mais aussi frais. Il est moyennement aromatique. L'entrée en bouche combine un certain art de la caresse et une note pulpeuse, particulièrement séduisante. Au milieu, la puissance est normale. Ensuite des nuances de violette et de framboise s'emparent du palais et le vin finit long, très fruité, sur une texture au tannin raffiné.

Very dark crimson. Meat extract nose – quite succulent and juicy, though not a very heavy charge of tannin. More sweet and polished. In fact so sweet it might not really be that appetising. A little reminiscent of a Northern California wine. Falls away on the finish. Not too heavy – quite a light touch. Racy and sweet. Drink 2014-26
