Clos du Clocher - Pomerol 2021

LIMITED QUANTITY : SMALL VINEYARD OF LESS THAN 6 HA, LOCATED IN THE HEART OF THE PLATEAU

The birth of a classic
In the 1920s, the Art Deco movement reinforced the pleasures of simplicity geometry. In an echo of this aesthetic, Jean-Baptiste Audy found his terroir, at the heart of the Pomerol plateau. A ‘marvellous garden’, enclosed by low walls, with the church rising in the background. Clos du Clocher was born, due to become a classic of the appellation.

Loyal to its roots
Here there is neither extravagance nor superfluous ornaments, but an independence of style that is marked and unique. The vines are loyal to the spirit in which they were planted, and to the earth that beard them. From the rare blue clay that both nourishes and withholds water when necessary, the vines show their force and their personality; profound, velvety, pure and elegant.

2021 vintage, verticality, definition, freshness, energy, density, loyalty to its terroir

Comments from the Press underline the rise of Clos du Clocher towards the heights of the appellation. Its blue clay on gravels terroir at the heart of the plateau and the precision work made in the vineyard and in the cellar gave an elegant and reliable answer to 2021, such a complex vintage.

The vineyard launched its conversion to organic farming

The 2021 Clos du Clocher retains what is quite an opulent bouquet, violet petals infusing the upfront black cherry and blueberry fruit. There is fine delineation and focus to the aromatics. The palate is medium-bodied, with a vein of graphite on the entry

Dark floral and black berry fragrances and some toasty aspects on the nose, rich but pure. Scintillatingly fresh and bright, the acidity is the main focus before softly gripping tannins come in and take over. Great structure but still with nuance and soft touches of minerality, mint freshness. A little tight and compact right now, but does display hints of chewy Pomerol charm and density while still being finessed. Elegant, characterful, with a long life ahead.

Fresh and caressing with pretty notes of brambleberries, violets and orange zest. Medium to full body. Very fresh and fine with plush tannins. Nicely done for the vintage. From organically grown grapes.

Le vin est juteux et dense avec un cœur de bouche parfaitement fourni et surtout une finale montante digne d’éloges. Ce cru mérite vraiment un coup de projecteur. D’une régularité exemplaire dans toutes les situations.

Compared to the "gun and flower" styled Clos du Clocher in 2019, the vintage of 2021 is more reserved on nose. The fruit aromas are relatively gentle, with hints of waxberry and clove on top of its iconic violet fragrance. In my opinion, its real strength lies in its firm structure and the profound graphite-like aftertaste on the palate. These are not just the concentrated expression of the blue clay terroir, but also the performance of its spirit in 2021. I do know this wine will definitely be more outstanding after 10 years of aging. ???2019???Clos du Clocher?“?????”,?2021???????????????????????,?????????????,??????????????????,?????????????????????????????,???????????????,??????2021??“????”???,??10??????????

Dark cherries, wet earth, licorice, flowers, leafy herbs, and savory plums are all over the place here, in the nose and on the crisp, savory, creamy palate. The addition of more Cabernet Franc in the blend this year added a lot to the wine. The wine blends 70% Merlot with 30% Cabernet Franc. Drink from 2024-2038. 91-93

The 2021 Clos du Clocher has quite a ripe, black plum and licorice bouquet, hints of menthol emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins on the entry, and quite dense on the finish, which will need to soften by bottling time. But there is good substance here, and élevage should shape this into a fine Pomerol.

Dunkle Farbe.

A blend of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc, the 2021 Clos du Clocher delivers aromas of plums and blackberries mingled with hints of spices and creamy new oak. Medium to full-bodied, lively and structured, with a deep core of fruit and powdery tannins that assert themselves on the finish, it derives from prime parcels on the plateau of Pomerol.

Sweet blackcurrants on the nose with wild purple flowers, I could smell this all day. Upfront and energetic, the tannins make the immediate impact coating the mouth in a fine dark chocolate and black cherry powder with a chewiness that is so appealing and a mouthwatering hit on the mid palate. I like the succulence and roundness here, but also the verticality, it goes upwards and sideways - it's not massively weighty but you get the flavour and the texture all around giving structure and definition. There is an ease about this while still delivering depth. Poised at the moment, still with that tannic might, real power. Great preservation of fruity flavours and freshness. This will be excellent in time. A great buy! Started conversion to organic this year.
