Clos du Clocher - Pomerol 2019

LIMITED QUANTITIES : SMALL VINEYARD OF LESS THAN 6 HA, LOCATED IN THE HEART OF THE PLATEAU

The birth of a classic
In the 1920s, the Art Deco movement reinforced the pleasures of simplicity geometry. In an echo of this aesthetic, Jean-Baptiste Audy found his terroir, at the heart of the Pomerol plateau. A ‘marvellous garden’, enclosed by low walls, with the church rising in the background. Clos du Clocher was born, due to become a classic of the appellation.
Loyal to its roots
Here there is neither extravagance nor superfluous ornaments, but an independence of style that is marked and unique. The vines are loyal to the spirit in which they were planted, and to the earth that beard them. From the rare blue clay that both nourishes and withholds water when necessary, the vines show their force and their personality; profound, velvety, pure and elegant.
Moments of repose
Rigour and discretion mark the aromas of the first few years, followed by a wave of originality and a singular character. There are of course clear expressions of Merlot, the king grape of Pomerol, but also spices, mint, tobacco and the freshness and subtlety of the old Cabernet Franc vines. Timeless rather than fashionable, clos du Clocher follows its own path.

Rich, deep and powerful, we are very much in the heart of Pomerol here, with black chocolate, cocoa bean, espresso, slate, balanced chalky tannins that set off an edge of graphite and gunsmoke. Harvest 20 September to October 5, fermented with native yeasts and aged in 60%, 47hl/h yield. This was first full vintage for technical director Mathieu Bonté, working alongside owner Jean-Baptiste Bourotte.

Every detail of Clos du Clocher 2019 expresses the charisma of a Grand Vin de Pomerol. A strand of pedigree violet emerges from the luxurious blackberry, waxberry, and brambleberry; just a sniff is good enough to give you goose bumps. The palate is relatively intense and energetic, offering metallic structure on the mid-palate. Iron powder-like texture dances up with elegant floral notes on the finish, like what we called “Guns and Violet.” Clos du Clocher 2019?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????,???????????????????????????????????,???????“?????”??????

Aromas of blackberries, plums, peppercorns, walnuts and toasted bread. It’s medium-to full-bodied with firm, silky tannins. Excellent freshness with a delicious, creamy and spicy finish. 75% merlot and 25% cabernet franc. Drink after 2024.

A classy, slightly restrained, yet impressive effort, the 2019 Clos Du Clocher is deep purple/ruby-hued, with wonderful cassis fruits, notes of sappy herbs, flowers, and cedar, medium to full body, ripe yet certainly present tannins, and a great finish. The cellar will be your friend on this one, and I'd hide bottles for a good 5-6 years if possible. It will have 20-25 years of overall longevity.

From a five-hectare vineyard on the plateau of Pomerol that's predominantly planted with old-vine Merlot (plus some Cabernet Franc from near Trotanoy), the 2019 Clos du Clocher exhibits aromas of cherries, berries and cassis mingled with hints of warm spices, licorice and creamy new oak. Full-bodied, velvety and layered, it's lively and concentrated, with a deep core of fruit and plenty of ripe tannin. This is a fine effort that should reward a bit of bottle age. 93+

The 2019 Clos du Clocher presents a nose of beautifully defined black cherry and boysenberry fruit, truffle and hints of cedar, all very focused and full of vigor. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins. Some oak has yet to be subsumed on the entry, but there is great structure here, leading to a complex, tensile finish. This is an outstanding Pomerol.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2019 Clos du Clocher needs a little coaxing to reveal subtle scents of black raspberries, kirsch and wild blueberries, before a drop-dead gorgeous perfume of candied violets, cinnamon stick, clove oil, Darjeeling tea and star anise take center stage. The medium to full-bodied palate is very finely knit, with ripe, plush tannins and seamless freshness supporting the elegant flavors, finishing long and fragrant.

The 2019 Clos du Clocher is a wonderfully complete and expressive wine. Lifted aromatics lead into a core of inky dark fruit, with beams of tannin that give the wine shape as well as energy. There is a sense of vibrancy to the 2019 that I find very appealing. Hints of lavender, sage, mint and licorice add pretty top notes to round things out. This is such a pretty wine.

The 2019 Clos du Clocher has a very seductive bouquet with layers of dark cherry, wild strawberry, soy and truffle scents. Later a touch of vanilla emanates from the oak, perfectly in sync with the fruit. The palate is very well balanced and super-smooth, fine acidity and a graceful, yet quite intense finish that leaves a residue of spice on the aftertaste. Very persistent. Outstanding.

Flowers, black cherry, gun powder and a touch of mint on the nose get your initial attention. But the best part of the wine is on the medium-bodied, soft, silky, elegant, refined and long palate, that carries all the sweet, ripe, fresh, pure cherry and plum notes that end with a shot of chocolate. 91-93 Pts

Lots of dark fruit and chocolate with blackberry and walnut character. It's full-bodied with round, chewy tannins and a flavorful finish. Some earth, too.

70% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc.
