Clos Apalta - Apalta 2005

Clos Apalta, one of the oldest vineyards of Cabernet Sauvignon and Carmenère in Chile.

Tucked away in the Colchagua Valley, near the town of Santa Cruz, the Apalta Valley was the place selected by a visionary in the 1910s who planted this amazing vineyard using a unique French massal selection. In 1994, Alexandra Marnier Lapostolle and her husband Cyril de Bournet acquired this property. Clos Apalta was born in 1997 as the iconic wine of the Domaines Bournet-Lapostolle in Chile under the idea to magnify the exceptional terroir of Apalta with French expertise.
Shaping the vineyard foot by foot, building a state-of-the-art gravity fed winery, the family succeeded in making Clos Apalta one of the most iconic wines in South America. Currently, the team is led by the son of the founders and 7th generation, Charles de Bournet. Many international rewards have consolidated its position in the “Legends of Chile” (2005 TOP#1 Wine spectator Magazine, 2017, 100pts by James Suckling, for the third time).

This was the Wine of the Year for the Wine Spectator in 2008 and I voted for it! Full body, fresh and focused with gorgeous fruit and and spices. Such transparency. So very young now. A blend of 42% carmenere, 28% cabernet sauvignon, 26% merlot and 4% petit Verdot.”

This is a wine that is very layered and beautiful with blackberries, dark chocolate and hazelnut character. It's so polished and pretty now. This was the Wine Spectator Wine of the Year in 2008 and it's wonderful now.

The 2005 Clos Apalta Limited Release is composed of 42% Carmenere, 28% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, and 4% Petit Verdot. Opaque purple-colored, the nose reveals notes of pain grille, mineral, spice box, and plummy black and blue fruits. This leads to a layered, nearly opulent wine with gobs of savory, spicy black fruits, excellent balance, and superb integration of oak, tannin, and acidity. It will evolve for 4-6 years and be at its best from 2013 to 2025. Casa Lapostolle is French owned by the proprietors of Grand Marnier.

Gorgeous aromas of warm ganache and mocha lead to a rich, velvety palate loaded with currant, fig paste, black licorice, cassis bush and bramble notes. The long, juicy finish has great grip and density, with echoes of graphite, dark fruit and mineral. Should greatly reward cellaring. Carmenère, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Best from 2009 through 2019. 5,987 cases made.
