Clinet - Pomerol 2023

Clinet, a rising star of the appellation

Modest but sure of its presence, Clinet lies at one of the highest points upon the renowned plateau at the heart of Pomerol - instantly recognisable by its red shutters and beautiful roses. It is home to one of the oldest vineyards in the appellation, with traces of the vineyard's existence dating back to 1595. This vineyard is equally famed for offering wine with an incomparable character and quality.

In the 19th century, Clinet and Pétrus were owned by the same person. Now the estate belongs to the Laborde family and is managed by Ronan Laborde, also President of the "Union des Grands Crus Classés". The Clinet packaging is distinguished by the ‘Clinet red’ and a personalised bottle wrapped in tissue paper. Its 10-hectare vineyard sets apart with its atypical grape proportions for the appellation: it gives pride of place to Merlot but counts also 25% of Cabernet-Sauvignon.

The 2023 Vintage:

A cloudy start to the summer, with an ideally warm and dry end of the season, An early harvest (one week earlier than average), bunches carrying many grapes, healthy and at good maturity, A «neo-classical» vintage, offering a very aromatic, vibrant and intense wine of great purity. Consecrated by customers and the international press.

Tasting notes:

"Château Clinet 2023 is deeply coloured, with hints of bright ruby. Complex and fine on the nose, aromas of dark fruit, cherry and raspberry mingle with lavender and mint. The palate reveals a densely textured wine, exuding ripe fruit flavours of black cherry, plum and wild strawberry, sprinkled with cinnamon. A finish of pure pleasure, vibrant and intense." Ronan LABORDE, owner & CEO

The 2023 Clinet was bottled in late June 2025, which includes half a hectare parsed away from Lécuyer since 2022, includes 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and aged in 80% new oak for 16 months. This has a fragrant bouquet with bright red cherry and blueberry fruit, quite floral in style and well-defined, the oak well-integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with a creamier texture than its aforementioned stablemate, lovely texture, gentle grip, with a lightly spiced finish that conveys a sense of control. An excellent Pomerol from Ronan Laborde and his team.

The orange peel, flower and purple fruit aromas are so enticing. It’s medium-bodied with ultra-fine tannins that are long and integrated, delivering finesse and length. There’s a classy and restrained nature to this. 75% merlot and 25% cabernet sauvignon. Best after 2028.

The 2023 Château Clinet is flat-out gorgeous, and it's certainly going to be up near the top end of the pyramid in the vintage. Based on Merlot with a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon, it has a deep ruby/plum hue as well as ripe, darker red and black fruits, roasted herbs, graphite, chocolate, and spring flowers. These carry to a medium to full-bodied Pomerol with a round, seamless mouthfeel, present, ripe, polished tannins, and outstanding length. While it clearly plays in the lively, elegant style of the vintage, it packs plenty of muscle and depth.

The 2023 Clinet has a deep garnet-purple color. It slowly emerges from the glass with wonderfully fragrant scents of dark chocolate, violets, plum preserves, and blueberry compote, leading to hints of kirsch and rose oil. The medium to full-bodied palate delivers energetic black and blue fruit layers, with a velvety texture and lively backbone, finishing long and perfumed. Beautiful!

Lilacs, violets, smoke, spice, cherries, plums, licorice, orange rind, and chocolate mint fill the aromatic profile. On the palate, the wine is energetic, vibrant, long, and up-beat. The fruit offers purity, persistence, length, and width. It takes a few sips before you find its heart. But, once you do, it's apparent that the layers of vibrant, red fruits, complicated by the nuances of orange zest, are special. The refined, silky, finish builds as it lingers. The keys to the vintage here were the combination of cloudy summer skies with heat spells in September. In the cellars this is the first vintage with a pre-maceration cool-down which helped protect the grapes from oxidation. The wine blends 75% Merlot with 25% Cabernet Sauvignon. 14% ABV, 3.7 pH. Harvesting took place September 13 - September 20 for the Merlot, and September 25-26 for the Cabernet. Drink from 2027-2060. 95-97 Pts.

Deep rich plum in colour, great balance and careful extraction, you are held by steady hands here. Cloves, cocoa bean, liqourice, freshly cut dried herbs, thyme and fresh sage, slow-build and slow progress with slate-textured tannins. A great quality Clinet, well judged appellation typicity, and floral kick on the finish. 80% new oak, 42hl/ha yields.

The 2023 Clinet is powerful and racy right out of the gate. Crushed flowers, spice, mocha and a kiss of French oak meld into a core of dark red- and black-toned fruit. This modern, stylish Pomerol is so expressive. Hints of graphite, lavender, crushed rocks and pencil shavings linger on the substantial finish. Tasted two times.

The 2023 Clinet was picked from September 13 to 26 at 42hL/ha and aged in 80% new oak. It has a very appealing bouquet, quite pure with vivacious red cherries, crushed strawberry and violet scents. The oak is neatly integrated. This is almost Saint-Émilion in style. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins and a fine bead of acidity, lightly spiced with a crisp and linear finish. This is a delightful, composed Clinet that should drink well after four to five years.

Dark ruby, deep core, purple reflections. Delicate wood savouriness, black cherries, candied violets, mandarin zest in the underlay. Medium body, some berry fruit, inte- grated tannins, fine acidity, salty finish, balanced, a refined food wine.

Rich and layered, the 2023 Clinet wafts from the glass with aromas of dark berries, spices and licorice, framed by creamy new oak. Medium to full-bodied, deep and complete, with a rich chassis of powdery tannin underpinning its sweet core of fruit, it concludes with a broad, vanillin-inflected finish. As is routinely the case at this address, it's a successfully rendered Pomerol in a more modern style.

This is full-bodied yet tight and poised, with a pretty, pure center-palate of ripe fruit and fine, integrated tannins. Classy presence. May be better than 2022.

With ripe red fruit and spicy aromatics, this wine gets off to a fine start, with a brisk attack packed with ripe red berry and plum fruit. I also like the freshness, tension and a long finish. But it shows rather firm tannins with some drying extraction. Conservative score, as we await the final result after the barrel ageing.
