The 2004 Clerc Milon has a somewhat airy, much more floral bouquet than the d'Armailhac but perhaps offers just a bit more class and panache. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins and fine precision. The 2004 has a polished, gentle grip and a persistent black peppery finish. Very fine.

Tasted at Bordeaux Index annual 10-year on tasting from an ex-château bottle. The Clerc-Milon 2004 seems a little subdued on the nose compared to the two previous wines, pencil box and raspberry fruit. It unfolds nicely with time and is well defined with the cedar element becoming stronger, later accompanied by sage. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and a fine line of acidity. It seems pure and refined with fine precision on the finish and cooked meat lingering on the aftertaste. Tasted March 2014.

The Clerc-Milon 2005 has a taut blackberry, smoke and raspberry-scented nose with very good definition and focus – real class here. The palate is medium-bodied with a fine svelte entry, fine tannins with a good structure underneath. Very pure and focused, a coquettish little Clerc-Milon with a vibrant finish suffused with great nervosité. Drink 2010-2020. Tasted November 2008.

This outstanding effort displays loads of cassis fruit interwoven with notions of espresso roast, white chocolate, and menthol. It possesses a terrific front end, good mid-section, and moderately high tannin in the finish. Approximately 15,000 cases were produced. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2025.

Dark red. Cool, slightly medicinal nose hints at licorice, dark chocolate and currant leaf. Richer and more velvety than the Armailhac but less expressive and evolving slowly. This has very good acidity but also a lovely subtle sweetness for the year and surprisingly suave, broad tannins.

Raspberry and blackberry aromas follow through to a medium- to full-bodied palate, with velvety tannins and a caressing finish. Best after 2010. 8,500 cases made.

Despite the 2004's attractive black fruit characteristic, excellent depth, and hints of chocolate, roasted herbs, and smoke, its steely background, monolithic character, firmness, austerity, tart acidity, and tannins are worrisome. Hopefully, it will age in a positive manner, along the lines of the 1988. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2018.

Ruby-red. Currant, bitter chocolate and herbs on the rather inexpressive nose. Then sweet and supple in the mouth, but with a firm acid/tannin spine giving shape to the chocolatey, merlot-dominated flavor. In fact, this seemed less open than the Armailhac that preceded it. Finishes with substantial dusty tannins and a whiff of bitter chocolate.
