Haut-Brion, a legendary estate

When he purchased Château Haut-Brion in 1935, Clarence Dillon restored it to its former glory and to the elite circle of the most legendary wines in the world. This extraordinary, bold, courageous vision is now continued by the fourth generation of the family, represented by Prince Robert of Luxembourg, Chairman and CEO since 2008.

Le Clarence de Haut-Brion is the second wine of the estate. This wine has carried the name Château Bahans Haut-Brion since the first years of the twentieth century and was renamed Le Clarence de Haut-Brion beginning with the 2007 vintage, as a tribute to Clarence Dillon. Similar in style and elegance to its elder, the Château Haut-Brion red, this wine brings together all the unique attributes of a fine wine, while reaching maturity more quickly.

The 2023 vintage

A very beautiful bright, deep red colour, with purple glints. Rather unobtrusive on the first nose and then it begins to reveal notes of ripe fruit: fleshy, sun- renched blackberry! Tight, powerful and dynamic on the first taste. The wine develops with a creamy sensation on a taste of blackberry jelly. The finish is tannic, but full of flavour. Maturation will make this wine irresistible !

The 2023 Le Clarence de Haut-Brion has a more expressive bouquet compared to the La Chapelle, a mixture of red and black fruit, black pepper and clove, a little feistier than expected. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a little riper and plusher than the La Chapelle, a little more flesh on the pepper finish.

This really shows Haut Brion character, with black currants, blackberries, iodine, oyster shells and stones on the nose and palate. It’s medium- to full-bodied with firm yet open-grained tannins that are rather chewy and muscular. 55.5% merlot, 40.9% cabernet sauvignon and 3.6% cabernet franc. A wine for the cellar. Best after 2028.

Checking in as 55.5% Merlot, 40.9% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Cabernet Franc, the 2023 Le Clarence De Haut-Brion has a beautifully polished, medium-bodied, silky style as well as ample red, blue, and black fruits, some violet and floral nuances, classic Pessac smoked earth, fine yet present tannins, and a beautiful finish.

Flowers, red with black currants, smoke, cigar wrappers, and Indian spice create the aromatic profile. Medium-bodied, elegant, smoky, and loaded with tobacco, leafy herbs, juicy plums, and cherries, the wine is bright, long, and energetic, with a smoked herb, currant, and cigar oriented finish. This is definitely a baby Haut Brion that will drink well, quite early in life. The wine blends 55.5% Merlot, 40.9% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 3.6% Cabernet Franc. 14.2% ABV, 3.7 pH. Drink 2027-2045. 92-94 Pts.

More intense and deeply coloured than the Chapelle, this is inky, cassis, spiced bilberry, with a slow build tannnic architecture, and the most gorgeous slate scrape. Exceptional vintage of this wine, one to savour.

The 2023 Le Clarence de Haut-Brion is a heady wine. Here, the tannins are especially polished, almost uncharacteristically so, even through they are very much present. Black cherry, plum, chocolate, spice, new leather and gravel build effortlessly in the glass. Bright acids punctuate the finish. The 2023 is a showy Clarence with tons of character.

The 2023 Le Clarence de Haut-Brion is well-defined on the nose with blackberry, cedar and a subtle mint aroma, showing a little more fruit concentration than the La Chapelle. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle grip on the entry and fine backbone. It’s a little granular in texture, sorbet-fresh and pliant, with redcurrant and cranberry fruit. This is very enticing, even at this early stage.

With aromas of ripe raspberries, dark wild berries and flowers, the 2023 Le Clarence de Haut-Brion is a moderately weighted, firm and dense wine on the palate with sweet structuring tannins and a long, vibrant finish. This blend of 55.5% Merlot, 40.9% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3.6% Cabernet Franc is a great bottle in the making.
