Chauvin - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2023

The estate

Since 1881 and until Sylvie Cazes and her children took over in May 2014, the Ondet family took great care of Château Chauvin and gave it all their know-how. Sylvie Cazes, a passionate winegrower who fell for the charms of this beautiful property, wants to give Chauvin every opportunity for success in this new page in its history.

Thus, from the purchase of the property, an ambitious program restructuring of wine-growing methods and production wine, has been started. The proportion of cabernet franc in the vineyard has been increased to 25%. This grape variety expresses itself perfectly on the terroirs of Chauvin and brings depth and elegance to the great wine.

The 2023 Vintage:

Climatic conditions:

After a normal winter with sufficient rainfall, budburst was regular and even in early spring. In April, the team protected the vines against frost. Spring was mild, with high bud fertility. Flowering was early, rapid and uniform for both Merlot and Cabernet. However, the season was wet, with significant mildew pressure, which was effectively managed by the team. Temperatures were high in June, and July was dry with moderate water stress. Veraison was early at the end of July for the Merlot and early August for the Cabernet franc. The vines withstood a heat wave at the end of August, thanks to our clay soil, which enabled us to achieve good ripeness of tannins and a certain freshness in our wines.

This marks the 10th anniversary of Sylvie Cazes and family at Château Chauvin, and they have a successful vintage on their hands here. Rose petals, raspberry, tomato leaf, fragrant and sculputed, attractive fine architecture, enjoyable, with a confident appeal, and a stretched out finish.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2023 Chauvin rocks up with eager-to-please notes of black cherries and juicy plums, giving way to touches of licorice, menthol, and garrigue. The medium-bodied palate is elegantly styled and refreshing, with soft tannins and energetic black fruits leading to a floral burst on the finish.

A brilliant Saint-Emilion, the 2023 Château Chauvin comes from an estate that continues to function at an incredibly high level today and certainly merits more attention. Darker berries, hints of cassis, graphite, crushed stone, and violet-driven aromatics define the nose, and it's medium-bodied on the palate, with fine tannins, a pure, focused, layered mouthfeel, and a great finish. Based on 77% Merlot and 23% Cabernet Franc and aged 14 months in 50% new French oak, it's going to benefit from 4-5 years of bottle age and keep for 15 years or more. Drink 2030-2045.

Flowers, raspberries, strawberries, licorice, and mint open the wine. On the medium-bodied palate, the wine is soft, sweet, and refined, with a chalky edge on the backend, making it an energetic pleasure to taste on release, or you can wait a bit for more complexity. Drink from 2027-2038.

The 2023 Chauvin is a very sexy, racy Saint-Émilion. Dark red plum fruit, cedar, tobacco and blood orange are nicely pushed forward. Plush contours wrap it all together effortlessly. Even with all of its obvious intensity, Chauvin remains medium in body—more grace than power. Tasted two times.

The 2023 Chauvin is well defined on the nose with brambly red fruit, crushed roses and light orange blossom scents. The oak is well integrated. The palate is medium-bodied, with supple tannins that frame the vibrant raspberry and strawberry fruit, lightly spiced on the easygoing finish. A delicious Chauvin for relatively early drinking compared to other recent vintages.

A pretty and subtle red with aromas of dark berries, dark cherries and hints of flowers and stones. Medium-bodied with fine tannins and a caressing finish. Touches of chalk and stone at the end. 80% merlot and 20% cabernet franc. Better in a year or two.

Ripe black cherries, new leather, graphite, and hints of framboise all emerge from the 2023 Château Chauvin, a medium to full-bodied, mineral-laced beauty revealing fine tannins, nicely integrated acidity, and a great finish. It brings good ripeness yet has a solid underlying sense of structure and tannic grip.

Chauvin (St Emilion; tasted at the Association des Grands Crus Classés at Dassault). A lovely quite distinct aromatic profile, very bright and energetic and exuberant, quite lifted and elegant but light on its feet, as it were. Dark berry fruits, a little loganberry – with its additional acidity and freshness – and Griotte cherry. White peppercorns. Almost a hint of mimosa. On the palate this has quite a narrow frame. A delicate and subtle wine with less flesh and substance than many, but that is more than compensated for by copious energy and a very crunchy fruit profile. Finishes on cassis and grape skin.

Espresso, licorice, and black cherry notes open the wine. The medium-bodied palate is soft, fragrant, and fresh, delivering a lot of sweet, though, firm, red fruits with energy, as well as a chalky texture on the palate, and in the finish. You can either enjoy this just about on release, or wait a bit, for more complexity. Drink from 2026-2038. 89-91 Pts.

Closed aromatics at this early stage, intense ruby red colour, plenty of structured tannins, good freshness, rose bud and tomato leaf, fairly serious in tone, combines cool climate aromatics with intensity of blackberry fruit and the squid ink that is a signature of the vintage. 10th anniversary of Sylvie Cazes and family at Chauvin, and a successful vintage here.

The 2023 Chauvin has a generous bouquet with ample redcurrant and strawberry fruit, although it needs a little more delineation and has a scintilla of over-ripeness. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannins. This is quite a firm and structured Chauvin with a light dash of white pepper on the finish. Not bad, though I have found more refinement in other vintages.

Dark ruby, opaque core, purple reflections, brightening at the edge. Fresh cherries, a hint of plums, nuances of dried fruit, candied orange zest. Juicy, red berryish nuanc- es, subtle fruit, ripe tannins, mineral and salty, fresh finish, lemony aftertaste.
