Château Talbot - Saint-Julien 2010

After a rainy autumn, replenishing groundwater and a harsh winter to the sky, followed a drying summer, with cool nights and a harvest period from late September to October 15 to pick up healthy, perfectly ripe grapes. The surface drought and the cool nights of August are the essential points of the wine growing season that allowed the plots to produce fruits that were so concentrated (tannins, sugar, acidity). The development of the 2010 focused on taking the best of these three components to achieve a great wine of guard, a witness of a prodigal nature and know-how in constant evolution.

Good dark red.  Aromas of black raspberry, tobacco, mocha and smoke.  Rich, plush and full in the mouth, but with edgy acidity and a peppery note contributing definition to the raspberry and mineral flavors.  Not hugely concentrated but juicy, fine-grained and firmly structured wine with excellent balance.  A worthy successor to the very good 2009 release, and even fresher and cleaner.  Based on these two vintages, Talbot seems back on track. 91 (+?) points

This features a fairly plump core of crushed plum, blackberry and mulled boysenberry notes, coated with tar and driven by a strong graphite accent. An echo of pastis lingers on the finish, displaying good latent grip. Best from 2015 through 2027. –JM

One of the best Talbots over recent years, and possibly the best since the 1986 and 1982, this sexy juggernaut of a wine struts forth with an opaque plum/ruby/purple color and terrific notes of creme de cassis, licorice, roasted herbs and smoky barbecue. It is a brilliant effort, with full body, wonderful fruit, a savory, expansive mouthfeel, sensational texture and a long finish, but no hardness or astringency. This is a fabulous Talbot to drink over the next 20-25 years.

There's a real purity of fruit here with currant and blueberry aromas coming out in the glass. Full body, with fine tannins and a fresh and clean acidity. Very polished tannins. It's all about balance and drinkability here. Try in 2018

Tasted at the Union de Grand Cru in London. The Talbot 2010 offers dusky black fruit on the nose: cedar and graphite aromas, a touch of mulch and woodland. It needs more vigour and delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with a soft, broody entry. There are hints of mulberry and Asian spice, but I am seeking more backbone and penetration towards the finish. Still, this is a very fine Talbot, yet regrettably, since this is an estate I adore, it continues to lag behind its peers. Tasted November 2012.

2010: Abundant amounts of sweet, up-front fruit give this wine a precocious appeal compared to many of its brethren. It exhibits a dense plum/ruby/purple hue along with sweet boysenberry, black currant, cherry, smoke and licorice aromas and flavors. This deep, medium to full-bodied, classic Talbot should be approachable when released, and age effortlessly for 15 or more years. Drink 2011-2026

Chateau Talbot is now advised by Stephane Derenancourt (since 2010) and the deep ruby 2010 edition has aromas of cedar, plums and blackberries, supported by good precision and balance of soft fruit flavours and supple and delicate tannins. This is a very elegant and well-made Talbot that is not a typical 2010 St Julien.

Nez pas très ouvert, bouche douce, ronde, souple, assez bien définie. Le bois le marque, l'entonnage a eu lieu fin janvier, en pleine prise de bois. Le vin a gagné en précision, serré, tendu, vif, bonne longueur. O=2018 G=18 ans

Rich, very ripe cassis Cabernet fruit, smooth, even succulent flavours, quite an open style in this vintage. Drink 2016-26. (17 points)

This super focused and firm, with a bright and intense fruit. Full and super silky, with a long, long finish. Super straight and beautiful. This is better in 2010.

Plump and rather open, with delicious plum, raspberry and black cherry fruit melded with spice and anise. This has a nice chocolaty finish, with a velvety feel. —J.M.

Talbot Using 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot, the wine offers cassis, earth and tobacco scents. Medium/full bodied, the cassis filled finish shows a hint of green flavors in the end. 88-90 Pts

A luxurious wine, acidity and sweet plum fruits merge together into a fine, beautiful structure. It has toughness, to be sure, while it is the glamourous surface that is immediately attractive.-R.V.
