Tasted at Bordeaux Index annual 10-year on tasting from an ex-château bottle. The Smith Haut Lafitte 2004 has a very clean and pure, more Merlot-driven bouquet with light raspberry and wild strawberry scents. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, decent acidity and good body. Natural and focused, long in the mouth with a hint of tobacco and dried blood and black pepper on the off dry finish, this is an excellent 2004 with real panache. Tasted March 2014.

Bonne couleur d'un rubis profond. Arômes de fruits noirs croquants, café, moka, graphite et menthol avec des nuances de gibier et un boisé plutôt sexy. Somptueux et concentré à l'attaque,ce vin prend de l'ampleur puis montre un côté très sec en milieu de bouche, avec des saveurs de framboise noire, de réglisse, et un goût de chêne un peu sucré. L'aspect torréfié de ce vin rajouter de la complexité plutôt que de dominer le fruit. Bien en chair pour un 2004. Une très belle réussite pour un Graves de Léognan.

Le boisé vanillé (vanille fine) était un peu envahissant à la dégustation, mais ce vin a un bon potentiel. Riche, avec des goûts de fruits noirs bien extraits. Concentré en mileu de bouche avec des tannins mûrs et élégants. Appétissant.

Dunkles Purpur, rubiner Rand. offenes, homogenes Bouquet, feine Würze, dunkles Brot, Tabaktöne, klassisch und gross im Ansatz. Im Gaumen samtig, weich, elegant balanciert, pflaumige Süsse im Extrakt, trotz der Adstringenz relativ früh schon gefällig, langes Finale.

A sensational effort and one of the stars of the vintage, Smith-Haut-Lafitte’s 2004 possesses an inky/blue/purple-tinged color as well as a sumptuous nose of lead pencil shavings, spring flowers, blueberries, and blackberries. Surprisingly full-bodied for the vintage with stunning concentration, purity, and overall harmony, this is another brilliant wine from the proprietors, the Cathiards, who have done such a spectacular job at this estate since the early 1990s. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2022.

Deep red. Roasted red fruits, smoked meat, tobacco and a note of truffle on the expressive nose. Sweet and rather primary, with classic Pessac-Leognan flavors of iron, woodsmoke, hot stones and tobacco. Broad and smooth for the year, if not quite as dense as the young 2006. Finishes with lovely ripe tannins and lingering sweetness. This will offer early pleasure.

Lots of blackberry, spice and tobacco on the nose, with hints of cigar box. Full-bodied, with soft, round tannins and a dark chocolate and fruit aftertaste. Balanced and caressing. Best after 2009. 8,330 cases made.

Intéressant, très avenant, évolué, évidemment influencé par son élevage en barrique. Extraordinairement souple pour un 2004 à ce stade. Il donne beaucoup de plaisir en ce moment – il y a bien des tannins, mais pas d'intensité fruitée très marquée en milieu de bouche. Délicieux à boire à moyen terme.

The 2004 Smith-Haut-Lafitte continues to be an impressive effort. Its deep ruby/purple color is accompanied by moderately intense aromas of black cherries, black currants, graphite, and hints of wood, minerals, and acacia flowers. Medium-bodied and elegant, with good underlying freshness, vibrancy, concentration, and balance, it should drink well young, and evolve for 15+ years.

Another strong effort from this impeccably run Pessac-Leognan estate, the dense ruby/purple-colored 2004 exhibits a classy nose of crushed rocks, black currants, vanilla, and graphite. Medium-bodied, with good weight, a multilayered texture, fine purity, and excellent harmony, it should evolve gracefully for 15+ years.
