The 2013 Rauzan-Segla has an elegant bouquet with blackberry and briary scents as well as a subtle violet scent that gently unfurls in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with quite an attractive, pastille-like entry, decent weight in the mouth with a harmonious, nonchalant, quite detailed finish that will leave you wanting another sip. If you insist upon a Margaux from this vintage - here is where to come.

Extremely perfumed and pretty for the vintage with rose petal, currant, berry and hints of citrus. Medium to full body, firm tannins and refreshing acidity. Flavorful and bright. Drink in 2018.

Thirty-nine percent of the production made it into the 2013 Rauzan Segla, a blend of 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Merlot and the rest Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. One of the stars of the appellation, it reveals fatness and texture, which were not easy to achieve in this vintage. A dense ruby/purple color is followed by loads of black currant, licorice and smoky oak in the background. Medium-bodied with sweet tannin and good acidity that provides uplift and vibrancy, this successful 2013 can be consumed over the next decade or more.

Full red-ruby.  Tangy aromas of plum, blueberry and musky torrefaction.  Silky and suave in the mouth, with fruit-driven flavors of dark plum, blueberry, chocolate and sexy oak lifted by fresh herbs.  Finishes with sweet tannins and supple lingering fruit.  (I should note that a second sample I had, on a different day and at another venue, was quite dry and very unlike the first one, which I report on here.)

(58 Cabernet Sauvignon, 39 Merlot, 2 Petit Verdot, 1 Cabernet Franc) With 70% new oak this could be a bit of a beast but the fruit is very lush considering the frailties of many Margaux in 2013. The nose is stunning with layers of red fruit and the texture is flamboyant and the finish superbly long. There are feisty, boisterous tannins but these are highlighted by delicious red cherry notes. The oak is awesomely well-judged, too. A triumph in this difficult vintage.

Closed nose, chewy texture, light body. Somewhat simple flavours, but a very imposing tannic structure.

The 2013 Rauzan-Ségla is one of the brawnier wines I tasted in Margaux. Black cherries, plums, smoke, tobacco and menthol wrap around the palate. Savory and floral notes appear later, adding aromatic nuance. The 2013 impresses for the purity of its fruit and its overall balance. All the signatures are in place, but in miniature, which suggests the 2013 is likely to be a medium term drinker. The blend is 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc. Taste twice.

Un échantillon décevant en raison d’arômes de réduction incompréhensibles, deux autres absolument superbes montrant une finesse aromatique comparable à château-margaux, et une texture d’une délicatesse merveilleuse. Un des sommets du millésime en Médoc.

The grand vin has a fine bouquet, not complex but clean and fresh with redcurrant and raspberry fruit, nicely integrated oak. It needs a little more delineation although it does appear to gain clarity with encouragement. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannins, perhaps a little more rustic than usual but with good weight. Fine red fruit, linear and masculine, this deserves two or three years in bottle after release.

Dense, purple rim, lovely depth of fruit, smoothness of texture unexpected from  2013, seductively deep and still very Margaux

Dunkles Granat.

Good flesh to the plum and cherry paste notes. Finish is relatively rounded, with a good red licorice edge. Not a ton of range but this managed to get some flesh, and delivers nice mouthfeel too. —J.M.

This is a full-bodied, rounded wine that’s already rich, with the fruit riding over the tannins and wood flavors. It is firm, complex and likely to age well.
