Château Rauzan Ségla - Margaux 2001

After a very rainy and very mild winter, the bud break is late March-early April. The startup was fast but its evolution was slowed down by the cool temperatures of April. The sweet and dry spring announced the flowering from the beginning of June in good conditions. But the cool temperatures of the month of July will delay the veraison which will be observed only at the end of July. The weather conditions in August are normal, but by the end of the same month the temperatures are falling. Alcoholic fermentation Alcoholic fermentations took place without any problem for 6 to 8 days. Windings: 2 per day, 2 times the volume of the tank. Maceration: Active maceration on the best Merlot vats with short pumping over. Temperatures maintained at 29 ° C for 6 days; 25 ° C until draining. Vatting: Merlot: 20 to 23 days Petit Verdot: 20 to 21 days. Cabernet Sauvignon: 19 to 26 days Cabernet Franc: 21 days. Malolactic Fermentation: Most Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, as well as all the presses made their MLF in barrels. All MLFs were completed by the end of November.

Floral, slightly gamey bouquet. Finesse and depth. Lovely balance between fruit and tannins, harmonious, lovely expression of Margaux. 3-12 years.

Notes of new saddle leather, dried Provencal herbs, and a hint of lavender jump from the glass of this deep ruby/purple-tinged Margaux. The complex aromatics are followed by a sweet attack, but some narrowing on the mid-palate and finish is apparent. Pure and elegant, it is ideal for near term drinking. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2015.

Beautiful aromas of spices, berries and plums follow through to a medium- to full-bodied palate, with very fine tannins and a pretty, delicious finish. All in finesse. Best after 2008. 9,165 cases made.

This 2001 has taken a step backward since last year. Certainly the selection was severe and the winemaking team is talented, but a distinct herbaceousness as well as high, astringent, austere tannin can be problematic in young Rauzan-Seglas. Those characteristics are evident in the 2001. Although there are abundant quantities of high quality black cherry and cassis fruit, the wine is tight, hard, and difficult to assess. I may ultimately be proven wrong, but this effort looks to be a gamble given its austerity and tough tannin. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2020.

This wine had just been racked with sulphur adjustments, which may account for its austere performance. Nevertheless, it reveals the tell-tale herbaceousness and distinctive earthy, smoky, black cherry and cassis characteristics found in recent vintages. The color is dark, but there is a lack of texture, at least at this stage in the wine's evolution. Only 39% of the harvest was utilized, and yields were a modest 45.6 hectoliters per hectare. My instincts suggest there is a lot more to this wine than it is revealing, however, as always, it is one of the more difficult and backward to assess at such an early age. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2020.
