This well-known estate is now owned by Clos Fourtet’s Philippe Cuvelier, but the estate was owned by Jean Theil when the 2005 was conceived. This 2005 reveals a beautiful black cherry and cassis-scented nose, with a touch of spring flowers, medium to full body, and supple tannin in a sexy, lush, heady style. A sleeper of the vintage, it is already approachable and satisfying, and can be drunk over the next 10-15 years.

Dark crimson. Very attractively well-melded nose. Fresh start with fully resolved tannins. Just a little harsh on the end. But a seriously alluring nose. GV 13.5% Drink 2012-2020

Très ouvert et agréable, avec une jolie délicatesse de texture et des tanins bien fondus. Parfait actuellement.

Tasted single blind at Southwold. The nose is still unresolved, the oak needing more time to subsume itself into the wine with touches of blackberry, cedar and a hint of liquorice, and then with time, a faint hint of burnt toast. But the palate is quite impressive with good balance and fine tannins, embracing the tertiary elements of a fine St. Estèphe with a sprinkle of black pepper. The palate has good balance and robust tannins, finishing with a dash of black pepper towards the ‘grippy’ finish. This is a convincing wine with great potential (as long as the aromatics sort themselves out!) Drink 2010-2025. Tasted January 2009.

This deep ruby/purple-tinged sleeper of the vintage exhibits fresh, lively minerality intermixed with delicate background wood, sweet raspberry fruit, medium to full body, zesty acidity, and ripe tannin. Usually the top wine from Moulis, Poujeaux’s 2005 is again a fairly priced, impressive effort. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2025.

Sweet blackberry, sugared coffee and hints of fresh mint. Full-to-medium body, with silky tannins and a medium finish. Best after 2010

Always an impeccably made as well as under-valued effort, Poujeaux’s deep ruby/purple-tinged 2005 exhibits earthy notes of mulberries, black cherries, minerals, and spicy wood, soft but noticeable tannins, medium to full body, and terrific fruit integrity and purity. This impressively layered Moulis should be at its finest between 2010-2025.

Space limitations did not allow complete tasting notes for this Cru Bourgeois, but 2005 is the finest vintage for these wines since 1982. The range of scores for these wines should give readers an idea of just how consistent this vintage is at this level. Given the style of the vintage, most of these wines should be accessible young yet evolve for a decade or more because of their concentration and tannic structure.

Wonderful ripe fruit and spices in this wine. Full-bodied, with very fine tannins. Long finish. —J.S.
