Chateau Petit Mouton - Pauillac 2018 4df5d4d9d819b397555d03cedf085f48

Heavy rainfall, violent episodes of hail during the winter giving way to a spring with much milder temperatures, thus one could describe the first half of 2018. The coolness of March was followed by the month of April with a large 4df5d4d9d819b397555d03cedf085f48 mildness from which the vegetative cycle benefited thus allowing a slight advance in flowering, reinforced from the month of June by a hot and sunny period leading to an advance in the cycle of 5 days. 4df5d4d9d819b397555d03cedf085f48 The high humidity, coupled with the ambient heat in July, made the sanitary condition of the vines difficult to maintain, and it is at the cost of constant efforts that our teams have been able to preserve all the qualities of the vineyard. 4df5d4d9d819b397555d03cedf085f48 Fortunately, hot and dry weather then set in for three months with temperatures sometimes exceeding more than 30°C, definitively curbing the attacks of mildew. 4df5d4d9d819b397555d03cedf085f48 Although the first six months of the year were not very favorable for the announcement of a good harvest, the record sunshine, the low rainfall and the relative drought that set in during the summer made it possible to achieve very 4df5d4d9d819b397555d03cedf085f48 beautiful harvests: the berries were small but exceptionally rich in sugars and tannins. 4df5d4d9d819b397555d03cedf085f48 Given the advance of the vegetative cycle and a hot and dry summer, the harvest started at the end of August for the white grapes and at the beginning of September for the red grapes. 4df5d4d9d819b397555d03cedf085f48 At Château Mouton Rothschild, the harvest began on the Aile d'Argent plots from August 30 to September 5, and continued with the red grape varieties from September 10 to October 3. 4df5d4d9d819b397555d03cedf085f48 The wines have a lot of color and offer excellent tannic structures. 4df5d4d9d819b397555d03cedf085f48 They are remarkably dense and velvety with a rare aromatic concentration. 4df5d4d9d819b397555d03cedf085f48 Due to the drought, the quantities produced are down, but the vintage is already one of our greatest successes. 4df5d4d9d819b397555d03cedf085f48

The 2018 Le Petit Mouton is an atypical vintage insofar as it contains a higher percentage of Merlot this year. It presents a very pure, almost Right Bank bouquet of wild strawberry, raspberry and crushed stone aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with a fresh, lively entry, firm grip and good volume. A subtle finishing note of cracked black pepper note lingers in the mouth. Excellent.

Toujours au premier rang de sa catégorie pour la plénitude du corps et l’expression du terroir, ce qui consolera ceux qui ne peuvent s’offrir le premier vin.

The 2018 Le Petit-Mouton is unusual in that it contains a high (40%) amount of Merlot. Pliant, racy and supple, the Petit-Mouton should drink well with minimal cellaring. In many vintages, Petit-Mouton is a smaller-scaled version of the Grand Vin, but in 2018, the elevated presence of Merlot yields a wine that is quite different in style, with softer contours and a much gentler overall feel than is often the case. The blend is 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc. Yields were about 28 hectoliters per hectare as opposed to 34-37.

The 2018 Le Petit Mouton De Mouton-Rothschild is a beauty and shows both the richer, sexy style of the vintage as well as notable elegance and purity. Crème de cassis, violets, and lead pencil notes all emerge from this richly textured, full-bodied, yet pure and precise beauty. With building tannins and a great finish, it should be drinkable in just 3-5 years yet keep for three decades. The blend is 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, and 4% Cabernet Franc brought up in 60% new French oak.

Put your nose into a basket of freshly picked black and red berries and you'll get the idea of the perfume here. Dark in color, the perfectly ripe, sweet fruit is vibrant, juicy and polished. The wine is supple and disarmingly easy to taste but don't that let fool you, there is depth of flavor and the ability to age for at least two decades. The wine was fashioned from 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc, reaching 14% alcohol. This is so good it is hard to fathom that this only a second wine. With the exception of 1982 and 1986, this is better than any vintage of Mouton produced between 1962 and 1996!

The 2018 Le Petit Mouton is blended of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc, harvested September 10 to October 3. It represents about 26% of the total crop and has 14% alcohol—the alcohol has never been this high! Deep garnet-purple, it comes bounding out of the glass with sit-up-and-beg notes of crème de cassis, plum preserves and mulberries plus nuances of chocolate box, Chinese five spice, licorice and candied violets. Full-bodied, rich and oh-so-hedonic, the palate is packed with juicy black fruit layers wrapped in a firm, velvety structure, with loads of fragrant spice layers on the very long finish.

This is phenomenal with such dense and layered tannins that go on for minutes. It’s full-bodied with blackberries, blueberries and chocolate. Sexy and so beautiful. Not sure what to say here. Maybe it should have gone into the first wine?

Fresh and pure, with a mouthwatering edge to the cassis and bitter plum flavors that form the core. A bright iron streak defines the finish. Very focused.

This is a serious, deep and beautifully enticing wine with plenty of that glossy, glamorous Petit Mouton appeal. Ripe damson in colour, it has more Merlot in the blend than a typical year because only a small amount of the variety made it through to the first wine.
The Merlots were however, as you see at many Médoc properties, unusually rich and structured and this feels enveloping and hard to resist. Extraction was slow and careful and the liquorice, chocolate, grilled sarment notes are subtle but pressing.
Yields were 28hl/ha whereas a usual year would be closer to 35hl/ha. 26% of overall production, a little less than usual, and 11% press wine.

56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc
