Firm and silky, this pure merlot shows classy and structure for the 2013. Tight and dense palate with clean fruit. Old vines here. Better in 2018 but delicious already.

Peby Faugeres is usually one of the best wines in all of the top vintages, thanks to the severe selection and impressive consulting team of Stephan von Neipperg on vineyard management and Michel Rolland on winemaking and blending. The 2013, made from yields of 14 hectoliters per hectare and 100% Merlot, has some aggressive tannins to resolve, a rather intense chalky minerality, and attractive perfume of blue and red fruits with new oak is in the background. The wine is medium-bodied, slightly angular and less evolved than many 2013s, and may reveal more flesh and character in another year of aging. Certainly it-s a well-made effort, but hardly as inspiring as previous vintages have been.

This large property of more than 90 acres planted in clay and limestone soils on the St.-Emilion/Castillon Plateau was cropped at 18 hectoliters per hectare from a harvest that ran October 1-12.

Moderately saturated ruby-red.  Highly nuanced, aromatic nose offers black plum, raspberry, tobacco and nutty oak.  Sweet, suave and wonderfully fine-grained on entry, then a little lean in the middle owing to firm but harmonious acidity.  Finishes with lingering sweet notes of cherry and currant.

Powerful, firmly structured wine although misses the concentration. Note of  limestone terroir. Ripe but tight tannic structure

The Peby-Faugeres feels too sweet on the nose and it is missing some definition in expense for voluptuousness. The palate is sweet and rounded on the entry with plum dark plum fruit mixed with boysenberry jam and fig. It actually finishes in seductive fashion although I am concerned that it feels a little overdone in a vintage when that was not a good move.

Very beautiful for the vintage with a seamless tannin structure and cool character of fruit such as blueberries and blackberries. Full body. Fresh finish. Pure merlot.

Shows a mix of bright, perfumy floral, cherry, red licorice, plum skin and sweet vanilla notes which are very fresh in feel. Subtle minerality lines the finish. —J.M.

Ripe and soft, this Grand Cru Classé is a dense wine. It is full of berry fruits that are layered with acidity, giving the wine a fresh lift. It does have some aging potential.
