Leuchtendes Weinrot mit erstem Reifeschimmer. offenes Bouquet, rotbeerige Süsse, Datteltöne, Kreuzkümmel, Dörrpflaumen und Korinthen, sanfte Rauchnoten im Untergrund. Im Gaumen saftig, gut stützende Muskulatur, dezente Tanninreserven aufweisend, mit Dörrfrüchten und Kaffee endend, sogar mit einem Hauch Feigen, momentan dem reifer wirkenden 1990er fast ebenbürtig.

Elegant and well made. Color is medium-dark ruby. Aromas of dried cherries and licorice. Full-bodied and well structured, with compacted velvety tannins and a long aftertaste of chocolate and fruit and hints of earth.--1989 Bordeaux horizontal. Best after 2004.

Neither the 1989 or 1990 performed as well as I might have hoped. The 1989 was tight, with a lean, austere personality, as well as astringent tannin. It exhibited medium-weight and ripe fruit, but the charm and suppleness this wine displayed the first several years after bottling appears to have gone into hiding, replaced by the wine's structure. This impenetrable 1989 requires 4-5 years of cellaring. Whether the tannin will melt away sufficiently for the wine to exhibit complete harmony is doubtful.

Pape-Clement produced a charming, forward, medium-bodied wine in 1989, but it suffers in comparison with their exquisite 1988 and 1986. For the record, the 1989 was made from grapes harvested between September 11th and 26th. Production was higher than in 1986 or 1988, no doubt contributing to the lighter style. It is a wine with plenty of charm, good color, medium body, soft tannins, and an alluring weedy, mineral-laced, blackcurrant fruitiness. I suspect many readers, no doubt because of the wine's undeniable charm, would rate it higher. Anticipated maturity: 1994-2003. Tasted six times. Consistent notes.
