Castle Nénin - Pomerol 2010

An early vegetative cycle slowed down by the fresh conditions of May and June. A flowering with cool temperatures and some precipitation causing a sagging and millerandage marked on some old patches of merlot. A rapid and homogenous veraison thanks to the very sunny conditions of the end of July. The grape harvests were rather late and marked by an excellent sanitary quality. Proportion of new barrels 33%

Good bright, saturated red-ruby.  Black fruits, licorice, mocha and a note of charred oak on the nose.  Supple, lively and fine-grained, with enticing chocolatey sweetness to the flavors of black raspberry, boysenberry and licorice.  Has the normal firm spine of Nenin but with the added sweetness and density of 2010, which makes for a strong vintage here.  Finishes with building, slightly dusty tannins.

This is deliciously plump, with blackberry and plum fruit at the core, studded with lightly toasted spice and framed with a roasted vanilla bean note. A lingering cocoa edge chimes in on the finish. Best from 2014 through 2023. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. –JM

The outstanding 2010 Nenin (82% Merlot and 18% Cabernet Franc) displays more boysenberry, mocha and black currants. With nearly 14% natural alcohol, it possesses plenty of glycerin, loads of fruit, and broad, classic notes of licorice and plums. This wine should be drinkable in 2-4 years and last for 15 or more.

In recent vintages, I have been critical of Nenin in the sense that I was seeking its sense of personality. However, the 2010 is the best vintage produced at the estate – a testament to the long-term improvements that Jean-Hubert has made since taking over the Pomerol estate. This showing completely surpasses my expectations. It has a very refined, very pure bouquet with dark red cherries, cranberry jus and a touch of oyster shell. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe, edgy black fruit infused with spice and white pepper. This is very cohesive with a long, tangy finish with hints of Asian spice lingering in the mouth. This is a great Nenin – perhaps finally recalling the great lost wines of the 1940s and 1950s. Tasted November 2012

Amazing complexity and beauty with plums, tangerines and walnuts. Full body and extremely silky textured tannins with gorgeous balanced and beauty. Goes on for minutes. Superb wine. Best Nenin since the 1950s. Try in 2018

2010: An 82% Merlot and 18% Cabernet Franc blend that hit 13.9% natural alcohol, the 2010 Nenin is a full-bodied, deep plum/purple-colored wine with loads of sweet boysenberry, black currant and cherry notes, as well as hints of earth and spring flowers. Broad and deep, it could turn out to be one of the best-made wines from this estate. It will drink well for 15 or more years. Drink 2011-2026

This full-bodied juicy Pomerol has plenty of depth and flavours of ripe blackberries, plums and cedar. There is a wonderful freshness and precision to the flavours. The 18% of Cabernet Franc in this wine adds dimension and lift to the Merlot fruit which in 2010 suffered from coulure and diseases in this vineyard during flowering. This is a well crafted Pomerol in the classic style - restrained, velvety, round without heaviness and extraction.

Bright and fruity with raspberries and blueberries. Full and silky, with a long and caressing finish. Lovely wine already.

Superfleshy but very direct, with long, racy raspberry ganache and red currant notes. Almost flashy, but stays focused through the long finish. Tasted non-blind. —J.M.

2009 announced the best Nénin ever in the Delon era and this follows suit. Dense volume. Lovely fruit. Fresh acidity and tannins. A little more linear and structured than the previous year. Drink 2020-2035. (17.5 points)

Nenin - From a blend of 82% Merlot and 18% Cabernet Franc, the wine reached 13.9% alcohol. Ruby colored with floral, chocolate and plum scents, for a Pomerol this has a stern personality. Boysenberry, coca and plum are found in the finish. 89-91 Pts

A sumptuous wine, without being over the top. It has delicious fruit and feels very luxuriant, but still displays a core of firm and dry tannins.-R.V.
