The 2018 Maucaillou has an earthy bouquet that does not quite deliver the fruit I was anticipating; maybe it is going through a sulky stage in its élevage. The palate is better, offering raspberry and strawberry notes, although it does feel like a nascent Moulis that is bereft of ideas. Not bad, but could be better.

Ripe, round, forward, fresh and fun, the wine is soft, on the sweet side with licorice, earth, tobacco and spice to flesh things out. This is a solid example of a Bordeaux value wine from the Medoc.

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2018 Maucaillou bursts from the glass with notions of plum preserves, baked blueberries and blackcurrant cordial with underlying violets and licorice scents plus a touch of forest floor. Full-bodied, firm and chewy in the mouth, it is packed with earth-laced muscular fruit and finishes just a little firm.
