The 2017 Château Lespault-Martillac, which is made by the team at Domaine de Chevalier, is a Merlot-dominated cuvée that includes 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, all aged in 35% new French oak. It offers a ripe, expansive, nicely concentrated profile to go with classic red and black fruits, smoked earth, chocolate, and dried herb-like aromas and flavors. It’s a medium-bodied Pessac-Léognan that will drink nicely on release and over the following 10-15 years.

The 2017 Lespault-Martillac is powerful, bold and seductive, with gorgeous up-front fruit, silky tannins and lovely curves. It will be a number of years before the 2017 hits its stride, but all the elements are in the right place. The purity of the flavors alone is striking. This is a gorgeous wine in the making.

Black cherry, thyme and smoke on the nose, moving quickly to a puppy-soft, finesse driven palate. Confrontational, curvaceous and medium-bodied, this wine is already easy to drink and will be very nice on release.

The 2017 Lespault-Martillac Rouge has a fresh, if slightly rustic bouquet. No offence but I can imagine knocking this back in a decent bistro. The palate is medium-bodied with gritty tannin, tarry dark berry fruit, quite peppery in the mouth with a solid finish that just needs to muster a little more finesse.

Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2017 Lespault-Martillac opens with pretty red and black currants, rose hips and dried herbs notions with touches of underbrush and smoked meats. Medium-bodied, elegant and with a lively line, it has a chewy finish featuring red and black fruit layers. The final blend is 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Sauvignon.
