Tasted at Bordeaux Index annual 10-year on tasting from an ex-château bottle. The 2004 Leoville Poyferre has a delightful, exuberant bouquet with ripe black plum, blackcurrant, cedar and sous-bois, perhaps more reluctant to leave its primary aromas compared to its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with a grippy entry of black berry, cedar and tobacco. There is excellent weight in the mouth and it demonstrates Didier Cuvelier's adept extraction, getting everything from his fruit in a more challenging vintage. This replicates the impressive showings after bottling. Tasted March 2014.

This bottle is showing slightly better than the one served by Didier Cuvelier at the vertical last April. The nose is still showing a lot of unresolved new oak that rather obfuscates at the moment. Too much? Time will tell. The full-bodied palate is very ripe and showy, an opulent Poyferre with a very sweet finish of dates and black cherries. Very assertive and lacking the natural calm of Langoa or Leoville Barton. I am hoping that bottle maturation with allow this Poyferre to mellow. Too flirty! Drink 2012-2025. Tasted November 2008.

A very deep limpid black/garnet hue. The nose has far more fruit concentration than the 2002, with succulent blackberries, blueberries and lots of vanillary new oak (perhaps too much?) The palate is full-bodied, gregarious, exotic for the vintage and its ripeness detracts from a sense of typicity. Very rounded and opulent with notes of macerated black cherries, figs, dates and a touch of Christmas Cake. Trying too hard? Drink 2010-2025 Tasted March 2008.

Raffiné et soyeux, élégant et richement doté. Sa structure est imposante, mais a qualité de ses tanins lui confère un côté civilisé et harmonieux. Longue garde.

Along with Leoville Las Cases and a few others, this is among the stars of the appellation. Made in a more floral, supple, Margaux-like style, the deep ruby/purple-hued 2004 Leoville Poyferre exhibits sweet, broad flavors, and plenty of tannin lurking beneath the surface. However, the abundant cherry, black currant, licorice, and smoke notes obscure the tannic clout. This rich, powerful, broad beauty should be drinkable in 2-3 years, and last for two decades.

Bright ruby-red. Very expressive nose offers redcurrant, tobacco, flowers and nutty oak. Supple, silky and pliant but with good energy to its red fruit and floral flavors. Finishes with broad, sweet tannins and a lingering note of tobacco. This remains quite open and appears to be evolving very much like the 2001.

Very clean, with blackberry, currant and light vanilla aromas. Full and juicy, with chewy tannins and a long finish. Impressive despite a slightly hollow midpalate. Wait and see as this grows in the bottle. May be a bit overextracted this year. Best after 2011. 20,830 cases made

Compared to the blockbuster 2003, the 2004 is a more streamlined, elegant effort without the power, glycerin, and thickness of its older sibling. Nevertheless, it is an impressive St.-Julien offering a deep ruby/purple color as well as a sweet bouquet of smoky cassis and cherries, medium body, and admirable concentration, purity, nobleness, and elegance. It’s not a blockbuster, but rather a classic Bordeaux for drinking between 2008-2020.
