A long, refined beam of gently mulled black currant and plum fruit is inlaid liberally with a smoldering charcoal note, while tobacco, ganache and warm paving stone accents form the background. A touch reticent through the finish, with the charcoal edge winning out. Shows lovely cut and length. Best from 2020 through 2035. 11,667 cases made

Jean-Hubert Delon thinks the 2001 Leoville Las Cases could turn out to be as good as his 2000. I’m not sure I agree, but it may come close. A blend of 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19.5% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc, the 2001 (which represents only 40% of the production) reveals notes of sweet vanillin intermixed with pure cassis, black cherries, and lead pencil shavings. Elegant and medium-bodied, it possesses a saturated purple color, high tannin, and a structured, backward feel in the mouth. This quintessentially elegant Las Cases needs another 5-7 years to hit its plateau of maturity. It will be one of the Medoc’s longest lived wines of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2030.

This is very floral and perfumed with lots of violets, roses and berries. Full-bodied, with ultrafine tannins and a racy finish. Superfresh and long. Focused and clean. Best after 2010.

A wine of great intensity and purity (what's new?), this blend of 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19.5% Merlot, and 11.5% Cabernet Franc boasts a thick purple color in addition to an extraordinary classic Las Cases bouquet of graphite, licorice, and sweet black cherries intermixed with currant and a hint of vanilla. The 2001 is a bit firmer, with higher acidity analytically than the 2000, and the tannin seemingly more in evidence. Nevertheless, this is a relatively large-scaled, dense, backward, concentrated offering that should prove to be one of the candidates for wine of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2030.

This is a model of concentrated power and elegance. Only 40% of the production made it into the grand vin, which was produced from low yields of 32 hectoliters per hectare (compared to 43 hectoliters per hectare in 2000). It is a blend of 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19.5% Merlot, and 11.5% Cabernet Franc. The wine boasts a saturated, thick purple color as well as sweet black cherry, cassis, graphite, licorice, and subtle new oak aromas. It is extremely rich, closed, backward, and brutally concentrated. This 2001 is more substantial than many of its peers. It will require patience given the high tannin in the finish. It is one of the classics of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2030.
