The 2015 Joanin Becot has a pleasant mulberry and blackcurrant-scented nose, just a touch of ink in the background but nicely defined. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly dry tannin, a more masculine Joanin Becot but just missing some freshness on the tarry finish. It just falls below my expectations from barrel but let’s give it another year. Anticipated maturity: 2020 - 2028.

The 2015 Joanin Becot is blended of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, aged on the lees in 60% new and 40% one-year-old barrels for 16 months. Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, it opens with crushed red cherries and black raspberries on the nose with nuances of underbrush and bay leaves. The mouth is full, rich and a little rustic with firm, chewy tannins and a long, earthy finish.

On the toasty side, with flashes of vanilla and mocha, but there's ample fleshy plum sauce and currant preserve flavors at the core, along with lingering notes of anise and violet on the finish. Best from 2019 through 2025. 4,750 cases made.  –JM

A juicy wine with chocolate, almond and plum character. Medium to full body, chewy and velvety tannins and flavorful finish. Serious for the appellation. A little austere now but will be better in 2020.

A mineral texture gives this ripe wine an edge while its full, red berry fruit offers some solid tannins and concentration. It's smoky and full-bodied and will be ready to drink from 2019.

A year in, year out value that should be bought by readers is the 2015 Château Joanin Becot and it’s 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc from the Côtes de Castillon region of Bordeaux. It boasts a deep ruby/purple color as well as medium to full-bodied notes of ripe dark fruits, licorice, toasted bread, and spice. With a rounded, sexy, mouth-filling style and no hard edges, it’s a terrific value to enjoy over the coming decade.

Lush, forward, juicy, dark cherries, chocolate and licorice deliver a sweet, round, fleshy, flashy, sexy wine with freshness and loads of sweet, sensuous ripe fruits in the finish. This blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc reached 14.9% alcohol with a pH of 3.50.

The 2015 Joanin Bécot has long been one of my favorite Côtes de Castillons and this is a little gem. A blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, it has a very pure and sensual bouquet with ripe raspberry, strawberry and cassis scents. The palate is medium-bodied with vanillary new oak on the entry, quite powerful but controlled on the palate, the 15% alcohol neatly disguised with a slightly tarry but fresh finish. Give this 3-5 years in bottle and wash down with a juicy steak.

Super-ripe black cherries, plums, spices, new leather and sweet French oak are pushed forward in the 2015 Joanin-Bécot. This is one of the more overtly ripe wines of the year. Today, the tannins are also a bit unpolished. If the wine comes into balance it may merit a more positive note in the future. This shows the extreme ripeness of Merlot in 2015.

Bravo! 17/20 2020 – 2036

This packs in quite a few layers of dark plum, fig and boysenberry fruit, without getting heady, thanks to a very racy graphite edge. The finish is long and fresh, bringing you back for more.—J.M.
