Dichtes Purpur. Duftige Brombeernase, dahinter Süssholz, Korinthen und heller Tabak. Kräftiger Gaumen mit engmaschigem Körper und guter Rasse, es fehlt Tiefe, aber das macht er mit Power wett, endet mit einem langen blaubeerigen Finale.

The 2016 La Gurgue has a pretty bouquet with blackberry, violets and a touch of strawberry pastilles, although I would have liked just a little more intensity on this Margaux. The palate is medium-bodied with edgy, slightly rigid tannin. It does not quite "flow" like others. For example, I am much more taken with the Villars family's superb Chasse-Spleen this year, and it could benefit from a touch more fruité on the finish. Good, but I have fonder memories of the 2015 La Gurgue twelve months ago.

The 2016 La Gurgue is absolutely delicious. Scents of sweet tobacco, herbs, licorice and new leather lend aromatic intrigue, but it is the wine's overall balance that stands out most. Deep and layered in the glass, but with terrific energy and freshness, the 2016 hits all the right notes, although it is perhaps just a touch compact. This is a strong showing. Tasted two times.

(52 Cabernet Sauvignon, 45 Merlot, 3 Petit Verdot) Rather concentrated and full, but actually not bad, this is a decent wine with some density and swagger and it is a huge step up on last year’s wine. 15.5+

Mid crimson. Lightish in weight but quite luscious in terms of ripeness. Floral top note. Pretty and Margaux with a light touch even if not that dramatic.

A touch airy in feel, this features bergamot and cherry notes, backed by lightly dusty grip and a flash of incense on the finish. Pretty, but a bit shy on depth.—J.M.
