The 2014 Les Grands Chênes is bright, plump and juicy, with good acidity in support of the fruit. Raspberry jam, mocha, cinnamon and leather meld together nicely in the glass, with an expressive floral note that adds lift on the finish. This is a lovely entry-level offering from Bernard Magrez. Tasted two times.

The Château les Grand Chênes 2014 is a blend of 65% Merlot, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Cabernet Franc picked between 6 and 22 October. This sample shows much better than the one the previous week: blackberry and tobacco notes burst from the glass but maintain commendable delineation and focus. Returning after 5 minutes those sweet cassis fruit beginning to dominate and shave away a little of the precision. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe, rather “chunky” black fruit mixed with tar and tobacco. It is quite bold in style and feels just a little austere towards the finish, but there is a sense of class here and barrel ageing ought to abrade any edges by the time of bottling.

60% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon.
Dark blackish crimson. Big, cheesy nose. Lots of impact here – definitely punching above its weight in an attractive savoury way. Freshness not tartness.

Round and supple with concentrated ripe fruit - the flavors are forward and direct with a mix of dark fruits and cedar with plummy finish. This is all about juicy upfront fruit to give early drinking pleasure. Well made from Bernard Magrez with Michel Rolland as consultant.
