Shows really well despite the difficulty of the vintage. Full body, complex and beautiful with black truffle and spice. Wet earth. Firm tannins. Lively

Tasted blind at Southwold ’06 Bordeaux tasting. This Saint Emilion stalwart is very Burgundian on the nose: pure and well defined with some tertiary notes on the wings. The palate is not quite so attractive, a little hardness, tannic, high acidity with an elegant finish that does not have the requisite complexity. Tasted January 2010.

Polished and rich and really reasonably fleshy for a 2006 with tannin but not to excess. Fresh enough. Not forced. Drink 2012-2018

Bright ruby-red. Primary aromas of blackberry, blueberry, licorice and violet. Juicy on entry, then densely packed and vibrant in the middle, with a fine-grained texture to the crushed black fruit and violet flavors. This suave, persistent wine finishes with sweet but firm tannins that call for a few years of cellaring.

Nicely concentrated and quite lifted red fruit nose - shows ripeness and character. Fresh, impressive palate of finely tuned vineyard fruit, but already quite forward and on the light side. From 2009.

Christmas fruitcake, truffle, cured meats and sweet earth along with black currant notes make for a complex, noble bouquet. In the mouth, some of the vintage’s tell-tale angular and astringent tannins give the wine a slightly attenuated mouthfeel, but there seems to be plenty of concentration, medium to full body, and lots of minerality. My instincts are that this wine is going through a relatively closed, difficult, ungracious state, but I like its potential. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2026+. 89+

Medium bodied, sweet fruited with a touch of minerality. Harmonious but a little lack of vigour and length. 2015-25

Dunkles Rubingranat, violette Reflexe, zarte Randaufhellung, in der Nase zart vegetal unterlegtes Beerenkonfit, etwas Orange. Am Gaumen feine Zwetschkenfrucht, wirkt etwas weitmaschig, etwas spröde im Tannin, mittlere Länge, mineralischer Nachhall.

Following the finest example of La Gaffeliere I have ever tasted (the 2005), the 2006 is a strong effort revealing a dark ruby/purple color as well as aromas of roasted herbs, pain grille, sweet black cherries, currants, cedar, spice box, and earth. This medium-bodied, elegant, moderately tannic St.-Emilion should be drinkable between 2009-2018.

This is lacking some fruits concentration on the nose. A little earthy and lacking cohesion. Medium-bodied palate, rather simple and lacking some acidity. Redcurrants, blueberry and some white pepper. Linear on the finish. Oak juts out from the fabric of the wine. So-so.

Nez sur le marc de raisin, tendu mais rêche en bouche, pas encore vraiment formé, mais ne semblant pas aussi fin que ce qu’on souhaiterait pour le cru.

Bright crimson. Heady, almost agricultural and charred nose. Really quite substantial, Very distinctive. Dry tannins on the finish but clean and neat. Punchy with good, direct, well-sculpted fruit.Solid and all on the finish rather than the nose. Bracing and impressive length. All on the finish in this wine.

With its dry tannins, this wine shows the concentrated, but traditional, long aging side of St-Emilion 2006. The structure is powerful, bringing together dry fruit and wood tannins. —R.V.

Medium-bodied, with some berry fruit and light vanilla character, but falls short.
