Château Figeac - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2004

Des conditions favorables ont permis un débourrement normal et ont favorisé la sortie des bourgeons et des contre bourgeons. Le mois de Mai a été marqué par une succession de pluies orageuses voire même de grêle sans dégâts. Un mois de juin ensoleillé et chaud ( 1° de plus que la moyenne ) surtout très sec, a permis une bonne floraison avec une mi-floraison autour du 7 juin. Les rameaux issus des bourgeons principaux portaient 2 à 3 grappes ce qui nous a conduit à faire un éclaircissage avoisinant les 48 hl/ha. Le mois de septembre beau et chaud a permis de maintenir un bon état sanitaire et d'atteindre une maturité optimale.

Tasted at Bordeaux Index annual 10-year on tasting from an ex-château bottle. On the nose, the Figeac 2004 seems a little green around the gills, slightly vegetal and lacking fruit intensity. The palate is medium-bodied with gently grippy, dry tannins. This is quite austere and masculine but it feels attenuated towards the finish. A better bottle with slightly more freshness was found at the Bordeaux Index tasting but it fails to shrug off that herbaceous edge. Tasted March 2014.

This is an excellent Figeac from...er...Figeac. It has a typical nose with earthy, red-berried fruit, aromas of cranberry, cedar and blackberry – the Cabernet Sauvignon driving it along. It will need a few years to mellow out. The palate is still backward but very balanced with chewy, bold tannins, very good weight – a Figeac that grips the mouth with notes of cranberry, raspberry leaf and a touch of sous-bois and tobacco. This will get better and better with time, as this wine has a penchant of doing. Drink 2014-2028. Tasted November 2008.

Le nez intense, un peu réduit, est très spécial, marqué par le canernet. La bouche débue par une attaque souple, le milieu de bouche est totalemet différet : dense, compact, un peu fermé. La finale, tendue, est de grande classe.

Cedary, herbal, vegetal characteristics interwoven with sweet currant and cherry fruit are soft, superficial, and delicate. This wine brings to mind the old Burger King advertisement, “Where’s the beef?” Figeac can hit superb heights of subtlety and nobility (i.e., 1982, 1990, 2000), but too often it lacks concentration and intensity. Those are fatal flaws in 2004.

Deep ruby-red. Plum, mocha, chocolate, licorice, graphite and violet on the nose, plus a whiff of baked fruits. Suave and dry, with good energy to the bitter cherry, menthol and underbrush flavors. Very much a cabernet-dominated style. Finishes juicy and youthfully clenched, with firm, slightly dry tannins.

Notions of mint, Allspice, and Chinese black tea emerge from this medium-bodied, elegant 2004. It offers more in high brow finesse and aromatics than it does in substance, texture, and flavor depth. While this pretty wine should drink well for 10-12 years, it would have been reassuring to see more concentration and intensity from one of Bordeaux’s top terroirs. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2016.

Difficile de reconnaître à l'aveugle à ce stade ce vin pourtant si original : le corps et la couleur ont la fermeté classique du millésime mais les arômes ne sont pas encore pleinement dégagés, avec une petite réduction provisoire qui ne lui permet pas dans ce type de confrontation de briller autant que quelques pairs. A revoir dans six mois, d'autant que de nombreux dégustateurs confirmés l'ont beaucoup apprécié à d'autres occasions. Nous n'avons pas eu la possibilité de le déguster à nouveau au château ou chez un négociant.
