Wine Advocate

De Fieuzal's winemaker, the enthusiastic Monsieur DuPouy, harvested his Merlot on September 11th and 12th, but found that his Cabernet was not physiologically mature until October 5th. He also was one of the few Graves producers to cut off grape bunches in July. The result is a concentrated, black/purple-colored 1989 that is the most powerful and large-scaled wine among the Graves wines from the Leognan area. From cask, it was a true blockbuster, with layer upon layer of smoky, intensely concentrated, pure blackcurrant fruit, medium to full body, gobs of tannin, and a finish that lasted nearly a minute. From the bottle, the wine is significantly more subdued and does not appear to possess the profound richness and depth I had originally tought. Nevertheless, it is excellent. Was it excessively filtered? Anticipated maturity: 1994-2010. Tasted seven times. Inconsistent notes.
