Medium ruby-red. Plum, redcurrant, spices, pipe tobacco, caramel and dried flowers on the ripe nose. Then sweet and silky in the mouth, with intense dark cherry and licorice flavors nicely framed by sound acids and smooth tannins. Just a hint of herbal cabernet franc to indicate the vintage. In a cooler style, and already accessible.

This dark ruby-colored, medium-weight l’Evangile exhibits creamy blackberry and raspberry fruit, a superficial attack, but plenty of charm, silky tannin, and low acidity make for a delicious wine to drink over the next 7-8 years.... Drink 2010-2018

Fresh tobacco and blackberry aromas follow through to a medium- to full-bodied palate, with polished tannins and a pretty finish. Caressing and attractive, with a lot of new wood. Best after 2012.—

(86% merlot and 14% cabernet franc) Good deep red-ruby. Aromas of black raspberry, bitter chocolate, minerals and licorice; this smells ripe. The palate offers lovely sucrosite and floral lift to the rather voluptuous, enveloping flavors, with slightly edgy acidity giving the wine a penetrating quality. The firm tannins seem a bit abrupt, but the finish shows an enticing chocolatey ripeness. The fruit here came in with potential alcohol in the fairly high 13.5% range, noted estate manager Vazart, who told me that a saignee of just 3% was done.

A dark purple/garnet core. This has a very attractive nose with blackberries, plum with a Burgundian sensibility. Smooth tannins on the palate with very good structure – this is a really seductive L’Evangile with lots of vibrancy and freshness. What really distinguishes it is the harmony right on the very finish with a touch of dark chocolate and mocha lingering on the aftertaste. Certainly one of the best Pomerols. Tasted April 2008.

14% Cabernet Franc. Complex, intriguing nose. Deep flavours. Really very unusually, heady aroma. Then good attack – mouthfilling with great ripe fruit on the front palate and then good balance of acid and tannin. Round, not for the very long term, but lots of stuffing – more so than most wines. Quite long. Silky texture. Really pretty snazzy. 17.5+

Big wine in the context of the vintage. Palate full, sweet and warm with firm but finely edged tannins. Maturity at the optimum. The Cabernet Franc (16%) adds an extra note of elegance and length. Drink 2014-2022.

Gorgeous aromas of blackberry, dark chocolate and vanilla follow through to a full body, with fine tannins and a medium finish. A slight dip in the middle palate. Pretty, with sweet fruit and a medium finish. —J.S.
