Castle Croizet-Bages - Pauillac 2012

2012 combines the grace and complexity of these wines born in pain. Nature has not spared the plant, after a cool and humid spring, the summer which succeeded it was hot and above all very dry. The year is later than the previous ones, but the yields are very low and the grapevine, yet soothed, gently feeds its grapes. At the end of September, the rain is squeezing but not much regret as the grapes are ripe. Whatever happens, the unwanted berries will be discarded, sorting remains a priority for everyone. The Merlots quickly showed a remarkable flesh that had been forgotten. As for the Cabernet Sauvignon, which they might fear, they have not disappointed, always faithful in the Medoc, they are sweet, rich in elegance.

Blueberry, mineral and dried flower character follow through to a full body, chewy tannins and a rich finish. Structured and chewy. Well done for the year. Needs two or three years to soften. Better in 2017.

Lovely meaty, savoury aroma, lightly spiced. More herbaceous on the palate but an interesting and attractive whole. Leafy and gentle tannic finish. Very fresh

Very juicy, plummy red with plush tannins and freshness. Medium weight, wonderful to enjoy with balance and grace. Well made wine.

A blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc, the Croizet-Bages has a a light tertiary nose that needs to demonstrate more fruit intensity. The palate is better with blackberry, strawberry and pencil lead notes, finer tannins that I have encountered in recent years, although there is still a sense of conservatism on the finish. Tasted April 2013.

This finely fruit wine is packed with black fruit accented by spice and wood flavors. Solid tannins and bright layers of acidity make this wine so typical of the vintage.

The soft, lightly mulled plum and cherry fruit is coated with dusty tannins and a lightly woodsy whiff. Slightly drying on the finish. —J.M.

The 2012 Croizet Bages is a soft, fruity, charming effort as this chateau obviously went for light extraction for fear of pulling out too much astringent tannin and producing a sharp, hard wine. The result is a pretty wine with attractive elegance, good purity and an accessible, consumer friendly style offering plenty of dark fruits along with hints of bay leaf and earth. It should drink well for 10-12 years.

Couleur sombre de bonne intensité. Nez fruité et mûr. Bouche suave, très fruitée, juteuse et agréable de longueur moyenne. Ce cru est en progrès et son profil plus mûr.

Dark purple with a pale rim. Very floral nose and then quite dry and tough. Embryonic. Should get there eventually. (points 16.5+)

Good expression of Cabernet fruit, some spice and quite elegant and continues the great improvement of this wine in recent years. 16.5/20pts ( 88/100pts)
