Château La Conseillante - Pomerol 2004 b5952cb1c3ab96cb3c8c63cfb3dccaca

The summer of 2004 will remain in our memories as very contrasted. b5952cb1c3ab96cb3c8c63cfb3dccaca July was rather hot and dry, but August was accompanied by gloomy and cool weather, unfavorable to the ripening of the grapes. b5952cb1c3ab96cb3c8c63cfb3dccaca Fortunately, September made up for this heat deficit, with record temperatures and long periods of sunshine. b5952cb1c3ab96cb3c8c63cfb3dccaca This Indian summer has provided a remarkable balance to the berries, both sweet and sour, conducive to the development of great wine. b5952cb1c3ab96cb3c8c63cfb3dccaca

Tasted at Bordeaux Index annual 10-year on tasting from an ex-château bottle. The La Conseillante 2004 showed better at the Bordeaux Index than the Farr. The latter came across as rather straightforward and blowsy, though the former definitely shows more precision on the nose with impressive mineralité coming through with aeration. There is a playfulness here, a sense of joie-de-vivre. The palate is medium-bodied with firm, slightly dry tannins. The acidity is well judged with a gentle build towards a gently grippy, truffle and allspice tinged finish. Very fine. Tasted March 2014.

I have always loved this La Conseillante since birth and it does not disappoint. It has a very ripe cassis, smoky, almost savoury notes that is very backward but showing so much potential. Superb definition. The palate is so smooth and voluptuous with layers of pure black fruits that just sweep you away. Lovely poise juxtaposed against that sheer weight of fruit with a pure sleek finish that has lots that malic edge in bottle. Gorgeous! Drink 2012-2020. Tasted November 2008.

The 2004 La Conseillante has put on weight since I tasted it from barrel. Made in an atypically structured, tight style, the deep ruby/blue-tinged 2004 offers up sweet mulberry, cassis, licorice, and roasted herb aromas as well as flavors. This medium-bodied, moderately tannic effort will benefit from 1-3 years of cellaring, and should keep for 12-15 years. It is somewhat reminiscent of the 1999. This is a very good wine, but the 2005 and 2006 blow it away – qualitatively speaking!

Red-ruby. Aromas of red cherry, violet and licorice, complicated by mint and tobacco; cooler than the '05 or 06 and more Burgundian in style. Suave and fresh but narrower than the subsequent vintages. Still, the tannins are ripe and easy rather than dry and the finish offers good persistence. This will make a tasty drink in four or five years.

Perfumed and subtle, with blackberry, chocolate and light vanilla. Full-bodied, yet not a blockbuster, with wonderful, caressing mouthfeel and a medium-to-long finish. Balanced and refined. Best after 2010. 5,415 cases made.

This light, fresh wine displays hints of olives, black cherries, and raspberries, a touch of minerality, and a medium-bodied, clean finish. While it lacks substance, depth, and persistence on the palate, it is an attractive, elegant, finesse-styled Pomerol to drink during its first 10-12 years of life.
