Beychevelle, owners of one of the great terroirs of the northern Medoc, continues to produce wines that are frustratingly irregular in quality. This light to medium-weight wine exhibits a dark ruby color, and a straightforward, redcurrant-scented nose with toast and earth in the background. Low acidity, high tannin, and sweet fruit result in a good, but uninspiring impression. The 1994 Beychevelle should drink well for a decade.

Offers some vanilla, spice and fruit character, but is slightly dry and lean on the finish. May be better in 1998. 29,500 cases made.

This chateau continues to suffer from bouts of frustrating irregularity. The 1994 (tasted on three occasions in late March) is a soft, light to medium-bodied, weedy wine that comes across as simple and one-dimensional. This is not a wine of classified growth standards, as the wine's meager fruit and high tannin suggest it will dry out before it attains an age of ten.

Tasted three times with similar notes, Beychevelle's 1994 is an elegant, light-bodied wine revealing herbal, red cherry scents, and firm, earthy, spicy flavors that are presently dominated by harsh, underripe tannin. Although it should turn out to merit the above rating, the wine's lack of personality and slight, hard style are worrisome.
