Tasted blind as a vintage comparison at the Valandraud vertical, the 1995 Beau-Sejour Becot was an unexpected showstopper. It has a very succinct bouquet, a little backward at first but after a few swirls, it unfolds with precise aromas of redcurrant, cranberry leaf, humidor and dried rose petals all with impressive vigor. The palate is well balanced, classic in style with crisp acidity and wonderful focus. There remains plenty of energy here and it comes armed with gorgeous notes of allspice, clove and sage infusing the red and black fruit on the persistent finish. This is an outstanding Saint Emilion from Beausejour-Bécot. Tasted December 2016.

Blackberry and cinnamon aromas introduce this gorgeous young wine. Full-bodied and velvety-textured, with plenty of fruit and spice flavors and a long, caressing finish. Best from 2002 through 2007.

This is one of the fattest, richest Beau-Sejour-Becots I have ever tasted. The wine possesses a dark ruby/purple color, as well as copious quantities of vanillin-tinged pain grillee notes, medium to full body, low acidity, and moderate tannin. It cuts a fleshy, powerful feel on the palate, but it does not taste over the top. Anticipated maturity: 2000-2010. Last tasted 1197

Beau Sejour Becot's sexy 1995 offers a dark plum color, followed by a sweet, vanillin, spicy, black cherry, and curranty nose that jumps from the glass. In the mouth, this is a supple, round, hedonistically-styled claret with copious quantities of palate pleasing plushness, no hard edges, and an impressively-endowed, rich finish. Although the wine is accessible, I recommend another 1-2 years in the bottle. Anticipated maturity: 2000-2014.

This is clearly an up and coming St.-Emilion estate that could join the top estates of the appellation. The vineyards are superbly situated, and the Becots appear to be willing to invest whatever it takes to build Beau-Sejour into one of the most renowned names of St.-Emilion. This is one of the fattest, richest Beau-Sejour-Becots I have ever tasted. The wine possesses a dark ruby/purple color, as well as copious quantities of vanillin-tinged pain grillee notes, medium to full body, low acidity, and moderate tannin. The 1995 exhibits an opaque purple color, and the best integration of new oak and flavors that I have tasted from this estate. The wine reveals dense, medium to full-bodied, highly-extracted flavors, low acidity, high alcohol, and moderate tannin. The impressive, opaque purple color suggests high extraction, which the wine's flavors confirm. This backward yet impressively-endowed wine will need 2-3 years of cellaring; it will last for 15-18 years.
